Setting A Cuddle Clock

As always with this author's books I try and find my favorite line and when Adra suggesting a cuddling quota that was what gave me the biggest chuckle. For anyone reading this book after me, and as I am the first review that would mean everyone...it was me who highlighted most of the book. My index finger was tired by 30% from all of the highlighting I did. I am a huge fan of Ford and Adra and waited not so patiently for their story to be told. There was an air of mystery about them in all of the Club Volare books. It was also great to see Lola and Roman playing a big role in this story and When Lola ordered every appetizer on the menu it was just plain LOL. I won't give any spoilers as far as what kept Ford and Adra apart for so long but I will once again let it be known that Chloe Cox is a master of banter, of realistic conversations and for setting up a scene that is so detail oriented the reader feels a part of the scene. As usual the hot compass points to steamy, I would compare it to a pressure cooker and there are also a lot of characters introduced in this book and one who I believe we will be reading about soon. I received an ARC for an honest review and I will admit about 2 says before I received my happy email from Chloe explaining the delay I want to go on record that I will happily do your grocery shopping, watch your kids, and shop vac your flooded basement if it means getting your next book out sooner. This is a book to savor and I delighted in every delicious minute if it.

Long awaited!!

I have been awaiting Adra and Ford's story for awhile! I wasn't disappointed in the least. I could feel the tension and longing between these two for the past few books, so this was highly anticipated! Ford is just as intense as I imagined and boy does he know how to get down to business. I need a Ford of my own (please romance gods!) Adra is strong and loving but has an unhealthy view about what love could be for her. She is open to giving her body but not her heart. Ford is willing to go at her pace but in the end he is relentless at pursuing Adra. I would give this 5 for 5 on the hotness scale, it was intense and blush worthy without possibly scaring a reader that is a newbie to BDSM. It has a great HEA that ties the story up nicely and gives the location for the next club!! This is for sure going into my reread list.

Don't miss this book!

I am new to reading BDSM. I like the trust between the partners, but in some books the public BDSM scenes ruin the romance. It is just straight sex. I like romance. This book had romance! You care about the characters, you feel for them. The writing was real and very funny. Having the battery operated bullet go off during an interview? I was laughing so hard! The only reason I could not give this book 5 stars was for the angst. To me, their reason for staying apart at first, didn't make sense. It felt contrived and fake. Being a Dom, no way would he just accept Adra telling him to stay away. His past wasn't that traumatic.The whole book, after they began to talk and dance around each other, was freakin awesome. The love scenes were hot, but romantic. Totally won me over!

Evoking metabolism as a condition of contemporary urban life and a vital political analytic, Solomon illuminates the lived predicaments of obesity and diabetes, and reorients our understanding of chronic illness in India and beyond.

8-14 - Your performances is sometimes hindered by procrastination

I liked the quiz. I guess this got me thinking a bit more deeply about my lazy habits. I could say that some of the procrastination excuses and triggers do apply to me. One major trigger I just realized I've always had was - procrastination due to anger/depression etc.

According to this book, procrastination does have its used - considering me, I think the major use could be procrastination for anger. There are a lot of reasons here and a lot of exercises and stuff to get rid of this habit. However, I have one doubt, I'm not sure how much this relates to procrastination - the author does not speak of procrastination due to external factors (like something may come up causing you to delay something?). Again I', not even sure this relates to the topic of this book, but this was just a thought that crossed my mind.

PS. the only time I most definitely DO NOT PROCRASTINATE, is when I find free books on amazon and ANY goods on sale price! :D

Plenty of options and tips rolled up into a short guide.

I had a fun time reading this book. I never really felt discouraged to be a procrastinator but the author generously gave me lots of options to defeat it. Very vibrant and upbeat tone through the book and I even admit I didn't know where to start after I finished. Lots of options means huge potential in changing habits and it left me with a very optimistic feeling that I'll become a better person.

The author gives some very good information about how to overcome procrastination. He keeps it short and sweet, which I like very much. The ideas in this book are very general and can be applied to any situation.

About the Author

Raven Grimassi is a Neo-Pagan scholar and award-winning author of more than eighteen books on Witchcraft, Wicca, and Neo-Paganism. He has been devoted to the study and practice of witchcraft for over forty years. Raven is co-founder and co-director of the Ash, Birch, and Willow tradition.

Grimassi’s background includes training in old forms of witchcraft as well as Brittic Wicca, the Pictish-Gaelic tradition, Italian Witchcraft, and Celtic Traditionalist Witchcraft. Raven was also a member of the Rosicrucian Order, and studied the Kabbalah through the First Temple of Tifareth under Lady Sara Cunningham.  

Raven currently lives in New England with his wife and co-author Stephanie Taylor-Grimassi. Together they direct The Fellowship of the Pentacle, a modern Mystery School devoted to preserving pre-Christian European spirituality.

It is a great book, but....

This is a great book for information on the Stregheria religion. however, it is almost exactly the same book as Italian Witchcraft, by the same author. I already had Italian Witchcraft, and was surprised to find this book to be the same book under a different name.

Alternate title: The Lure of the Bush

The Barrakee Mystery, published in Britain in 1929, later appeared in America as The Lure of the Bush. I'd suggest you buy the American title, since it's more available and affordable (at the time I'm writing anyhow). Either way, you're at the start of a truly great detective series.

Detective Inspector Napoleon Bonaparte (Bony) is a half-caste who attributes his superior powers to his mixed blood. Being half white, he's extremely logical. Being half Aborigine, he's a fabulous tracker. He sees through the stratagems of both races. No criminal, black or white, can escape him.

In this book, an Aborigine named King Henry has been murdered on Barrakee Station. The police give up without finding any useful clues. And so Bony arrives one day disguised as a drifter seeking work. He'll close the case with great skill and sensitivity.

The plot is rich in secrets, adventures, romance and atmosphere. And there are so many wonderful characters: the skinny station hand who lives to pick fights, the fat maid who keeps losing her shoes, the zealous Sergeant who keeps getting knocked down, the drifter who seeks vengeance for nineteen years. Our sympathies are with them all, as well as with the kindly but troubled family at the heart of the Barrakee Station.

A drifter himself, Upfield worked for years in the Australian outback as boundary rider, cattle drover, rabbit trapper, station cook and station manager. His characters sometimes reflect the racism of the time and place, so be prepared for attitudes from an era not our own. But Upfield's Bony is the ultimate antidote to racism, combining the best of black and white, nature and civilization.

I suggest you get all the Bony mysteries you can find, because they're fast going out of print. The Barrakee Mystery (The Lure of the Bush) is a good starting point.

Swimming a river in flood on a horse

I've read about 7 Upfield novels, this might be my favorite along with the Swordfish Reef one, though I've not found a disappointment in any. This is Upfield's first novel and my guess is that he spent considerable time in preparation and writing. It is fuller than his other novels. He has a gift of intrigue and characterization, and his fascination with unusual characters leads one deeper into his story. Along with swimming a river in flood on horseback, the reader also encounters the unforgettable breaking of a wild horse. Upfield finds usually finds several characters in each novel worthy of deep probing, with eccentricities pregnant with criminal possibilities. This novel takes the reader into numerous lives to ferret out the murderer. The murder and victim became entirely secondary to me, but the conclusion and solution are rewarding nonetheless. Many events occur in this novel, the most memorable to me is swimming a horse across a river in flood in order to solve a crime. I noticed that only one person had commented on this superb novel. What a shame. This is great adventure reading not to be missed.

Arthur Upfield knew his craft. You learn so much about Australia, the Aboriginal's, and the Outback. Bony is an exceptional character, walking both sides of the culture in a time where it would seldom happen. Given the gift of looks, observation, and self esteem, you will love Detective Inspector Bonaparte. Upfield knows how to construct a plot, insert such cleverness, develop so many likeable and unlikeable people, and absorb you into his world. Toward the end, I could not put my kindle down!

About the Author

William A. Cohen (Pasadena, CA) is an authority on leadership and strategy formulation and deployment. He gives speeches and seminars for the Industrial College of the Armed Forces, the Air War College, the FBI Academy, all four armed services, and corporations from Boeing to The Cheesecake Factory. He is the author of The New Art of the Leader, The Wisdom of the Generals, and How to Make it Big as a Consultant.

Valuable Resource for Strategic Thinking

Strategy (like leadership) might well be typified in the same way Mark Twain described the weather: Everybody's talking about it, no one is doing anything about it.
While there is already a bountiful harvest of materials covering the strategy landscape, retired Air Force Major General William A. Cohen, Ph.D., has made a valuable, highly readable, and practical addition to the strategist's arsenal.
Perhaps surprisingly, General Cohen is an avid contrarian; very early in the book he rightfully takes on the silly notion of likening business to war. (A topic I also wrote about in 1996.) And he rails against the folly of trying to divine strategy from either statistical analysis or simplistic market stratification.
While there *are* fascinating accounts of military history in this general's book, they appear alongside equally well-researched tales from the contemporary business world (with some personal and historical political tales as well). The anecdotes serve to illustrate instructive strategic brilliance and stupidity, not as blueprints of strategies to imitate.
As Cohen relates early in the book, he "researched the greatest strategists and strategic thinkers of the millenia [including] strategists from both East and West over a period spanning more than 7,000 years of recorded history, in almost every country on earth...."
Well, the "almost every country on earth" part does seem to be a stretch, but beyond this hyperbole the book is well grounded in a wide variety of useful examples from many fields, places and times.
DECEPTIVE SIMPLICITY
As I remind my own clients, the critical part of strategy is to do strategic *thinking* before undertaking strategic planning. And Dr. Cohen's ten universal principles prime the strategic thinking pump.
Admittedly, a quick skimming of these principles might well elicit a ho-hum response. After all, 'Keep Things Simple' and 'Exploit Your Success' just don't scream "ground breaking." But to dismiss these principles as either obvious or old hat would be a mistake.
As with most clearly stated principles, Cohen's are easy to grasp superficially, more difficult to appreciate at a deeper level of meaning, and far more challenging to actually put into faithful practice.
Fortunately, Cohen puts substantial meat on these little bones. He offers bountiful food for thought in a book that is engaging, frank, wide ranging and highly digestible.
Read this book to gain valuable and useful against-the-norm insights into forming and applying strategy.

A journey to "the other side" of strategy's complexity

William Cohen's wide range of interests is explained by the variety of positions he has held throughout his career thus far. Currently, he is founder and president of The Institute of Leader Arts. He is also a retired major general from the U.S. Air Force Reserve. After graduating from West Point, Cohen flew 174 combat missions in A-26 aircraft in the Vietnam War. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal, the Legion of Merit, the Distinguished Flying Cross with three oak leaf clusters, and the Air Medal with eleven oak leaf clusters. He has written 53 books, including The Stuff of Heroes, The New Art of Leader and The Art of the Strategist. His latest is A Class with Drucker. He also has an M.B.A. from the University of Chicago and M.A, and Ph.D. degrees from Claremont Graduate University.

In this volume, Cohen responds to questions such as these:

1. Why is strategy the key to success in any enterprise?
2. What are the essential principles of strategy?
3. Why and how must strategy be tailored to the given competitive environment?
4. How to seize a decisive advantage and then sustain it?
5. How to use strategic positioning?
6. How to formulate multiple, simultaneous alternatives prior to a major initiative?
7. How to practice timing and sequencing?
8. How to respond to a crisis?
9. How can the essential principles of strategy be applied most effectively?
10. To what extent are these principles universal?

To Cohen's substantial credit, he devotes relatively little attention to the "what" of organizational effectiveness and concentrates almost entirely on how to achieve it. In the Preface, he asserts that "tactical implementation should be directed toward implementing the right thing - a good strategy. Good implementation of a bad strategy is doing the wrong thing in the right way. It is optimizing the kind of approach that will eventually lead to defeat, not to triumph." In the business world, an inappropriate strategy (however effectively it may be implemented) will eventually lead to failure, not success. In this context, I am again reminded of what Cohen's graduate school professor and mentor, Peter Drucker, observed in 1963: "There is surely nothing quite so useless as doing with great efficiency what should not be done at all."

I especially appreciate Cohen's provision throughout his narrative of dozens of real-world examples to illustrate his key points. Within each chapter devoted to a specific essential principle, he includes a list o0f suggested action steps to achieve a specific objective. In Chapter 2, for example, here is what he recommends to ensure that an organization gains, and keeps, its competitive advantage:

1. Analyze the situation carefully.
2. Seek hidden opportunities and new solutions.
3. Act now!
4. Act boldly.
5. Keep the pressure on.

Granted, none is a head-snapping revelation. Cohen is a pragmatist who places greatest emphasis on achieving the desired result(s). He explains each of the previously listed five points within a context and cites a specific situation that illustrates the importance of that point. Each chapter begins with one or more appropriate quotations. In Chapter 7 in which he explains how to prepare multiple, simultaneous alternatives (i.e. a scenario of contingencies), he offers these quotes:

From Genesis 13.9: "If thou wilt take the left hand, then I will go to the right; or if thou depart to the right, then I will go to the left."

Mao Tse-Tung: "To achieve victory we must as far as possible make the enemy blind and deaf by sealing his eyes and ears, and drive his commanders to distraction by creating confusion in their minds."

Obviously, Mao Tse-Tung had read Sun Tzu's The Art of War, one of Cohen's favorite sources.

To assist his reader's understanding, he also concludes each chapter with a "Strategist's Log" section that serves as a summary of those points and thus facilitates a review of them later. From the beginning, Cohen establishes a personal rapport with his reader, functioning as a tutor whose approach is informal and supportive rather than highly structured and pedantic. He prefers to identify options and suggest possibilities rather than insist or even assert. As I read this book and others he has written, I view him as a companion on my journey of discovery. Without ever being intrusive, Cohen proceeds from one chapter to the next, connecting ideas and refining insights with both rigor and sensitivity. He believes (and I agree) that effective leadership is both an art and a science. What he refers to as the "art" of the strategist suggests a level of thinking that can only be reached after formal training in both induction and deduction as well as mastery of various skills such as situation analysis and problem solving. The analytical process becomes art only when it has formulated and then transcends meticulous craftsmanship.

In this context, I am again reminded of an observation by Oliver Wendell Holmes: "I would not give a fig for the simplicity this side of complexity, but I would give my life for the simplicity on the other side of complexity." Cohen's purpose in this brilliant volume is to accompany his reader during a journey of exploration within the dimensions of strategy. The ultimate destination? The other side of strategy's complexity.

Readable. Helpful or not, depends.

I am skeptical of all books promoting N principles/rules for subject X, whereas N ususally is 10 and X is either leadership or any term identical with improvement. However, I cant help myself from reading them coz the supporting cases/stories are always interesting and readable, especially the war/battle ones. This book written by a retired general is no exception. I dont think the principles are easily adaptable to a company, which the author admit so. However, his writing is smooth. His cases and quotes are good. Readable, for sure. Helpful or not, depends.
