Stinging Satire

I was fortunate enough to see "The Colored Museum" when it was off Broadway in 1987. It's amazing, though some might find it insensitive, especially the skit ("exhibit") called "Git on Board" which is a satire of a transAtlantic slave voyage. Other highlights include "The Hairpiece" which has two wigs, a straight one & a "nappy" one, trying to convince a woman to wear one of them. The best piece in the whole collection is a satire of Lorraine Hansberry's "Raisin in the Sun" (& the overacted movie version of the play starring Danny Glover) called "The Last Mama on the Couch" play. If anyone has a tape of the PBS presentation of "The Colored Museum," I would appreciate being able to get a copy of it because mine got cut off.

George C. Wolfe's play details the African-American experience, shocking the reader more and more. This shock is meant to portray the outrage and sheer madness that the situation of blacks in America provokes. Sometimes funny, sometimes sad, sometimes electrifying and political, this play is a masterwork that attacks various issues in African-American life.

The creative and imaginative pen of Geroge C. Wolfe "paints" a canvas of honesty through humor and reflection. How often do we get to laugh at ourselves while educating yourself and others? I have used The Colored Museum in teaching liturature to my urban students and it provided a vehicle that allowed them to express a deeper understanding of themselves. Very seldom does that happen.

THE introduction to Processing!

Once upon a time, far too many years ago to think about, I was a young nerd at school. I loved the sciences, but I also loved the arts and for a while that was fine. The trouble was once I hit that point where they start giving you careers talks I had to make a decision as to whether I was going to be an arts person or a sciences person. It was a strictly binary choice, no shades of grey allowed. I went the sciences route but I’ve always rather pined for the arts. Things are improving and now there’s a burgeoning community of tech-artists who blend the best that art and digital tools have to offer and one of the digital tools finding favour is Processing.

If Processing is new to you, it’s an open source programming language and environment developed for use by designers and artists. It’s used in both video arts and as a tool in producing interactive installations. The language itself is built on Java (though a much simplified version) and was used as a basis for the Arduino programming environment, so if you’ve used either of these you will find it familiar. Whether it’s completely new or not The Sparkfun Guide To Processing is well worth a look.

The book is project driven and split into 14 chapters each with its own project, which gives you something to show at the end of each one. (You can download the code samples in the book via https://www.nostarch.com/sparkfunprocessing but I think that you get a better learning experience if you type it in and debug your errors, yourself.) The chapters follow the same structure: an introduction to the topic; an overview of the Processing concepts to be used; a walk through the project code and finally some pointers on how to extend the project. So far, so traditional. Where the book really shines is in its explanations of the conceptual underpinnings of the Processing language. I’ve used Processing a bit before and have some more in depth books on the language but this one clearly explains some of the underlying principles that I had failed to wrap my head around; there were more than a few eureka moments. I’m firmly of the opinion that you can do much more with a sound grounding in the principles of a language than just by knowing the syntax so this book really worked for me.

Content-wise, you get a pretty thorough grounding in what you need to get started. The book starts with installation and drawing simple images before moving onto dynamic and interactive art. From there it moves onto slightly more complex areas such as working with text, processing images and manipulating video. Part of the utility of Processing is not just what it can do out of the box but also using the copious available libraries, working with external data sources and connecting it to other pieces of hardware. These are covered by projects using the Minim sound library, reading and using JSON format data and interfacing with Arduino.

Of course no book is perfect and there are a few minor quibbles with The Sparkfun Guide To Processing. Firstly, and perhaps most importantly, there’s a big strip across the back saying “Covers Processing 2”; Processing is now in version 3. In all fairness, the first full release of Processing 3 was after the book’s release, but it has been in beta for a while now. This shouldn’t be a problem as everything in the book seems to work with Processing 3; but it may put off some users who might think that they are buying an obsolete product. Secondly the coverage of object oriented programming is scant to the point of being non-existent. There is an excellent description of what classes and objects are but you never actually write either, which is missing a powerful part of the language. You don’t actually need to write in an object oriented way to get things done in Processing but it does make things easier when you work with larger and more complex programs. Finally, some of the final chapter on hooking processing up to an Arduino is specific to a Sparkfun product (perhaps not unreasonably as this is The Sparkfun Guide To Processing) but I would have preferred to see it address the vanilla Arduino board.

Quibbles aside, this is the best introduction to Processing I’ve seen. In fact I may go as far as to say it’s the best introduction to any programming language I’ve seen. It’s clear, concise and engagingly written. If you thinking about getting into digital art then this book definitely deserves a place on your bookshelf.

In summary, all I can say is arty nerdy types rejoice; someone’s got your back! Bravo for No Starch Press; bravo for Sparkfun and most of all bravo for Derek Runberg.

"The SparkFun guide to Processing" is a project-based book for the Processing language. Processing is a Java-based programming language that runs on Linux, Windows and Mac OSX with which one can manipulate images, draw graphics on computer screens, even communicate with Arduino microcontrollers. The book is organized like a technological cookbook where each chapter's recipe builds on the lessons learned from the previous one. Much of the material is culled from a class the author taught to middle schoolers and one could definitely see it being used even in an introductory college class or in a community "Maker" course. The book is a well-written collaboration between No Starch Press and SparkFun Electronics and its usage of graphics and code make it, quite frankly, a gorgeous technology book worth having.

Great Resource for Teachers and Hobbyists interested in STEAM and Maker Movement

Derek has created a great resource for the classroom teacher or "maker". I teach a digital art class to high schoolers. One of my goals is to encourage my art students to create interactive and kinetic artwork utilizing coding and robotics. This book is a GREAT resource for anyone who wants to explore these topics. It is written simply (good mix of technical descriptions and verbiage that is approachable to the complete beginner). This can be used as a text book that your students can work independently and develop their knowledge in their own way.

Why do things so nearly perfectly, and then screw it up?

(THIS REVIEW IS FOR THE RELEASE, NOT THE CONTENT!!!! The Dragonball story is excellent, 5 stars.)

Not only is it censored in a really odd way that just didn't need to be done, but they only include a FEW of the original color pages, about 20%!!! What is the point of making it so close to perfect and yet so far?

All the pages you see that have an ugly grayscale shading, like the first appearance of Kamesennin, were actually in COLOR, but Viz just didn't want to cut into their profits by printing them the original way.

They were re-released in Japan about 3 years ago in 35 Volumes, with all the color pages in tact. So it's not like they weren't available.

This release drops down to 2 stars. That's just shady what they did.

If you haven't bought any of the books though, I still recommend this set as it's the closest to the original Japanese version.

One word, CENSORED.

They included the beautiful full and spot color pages, smaller than the original pulp release in Shonen Jump but larger than and higher quality than the small reprint versions.

They put 3 volumes together so you get a nice big chunk of story.

Great translations, except that they translate certain Japanese dialects as "American Hillbilly". VERY annoying.

But what boggles the mind is that they leave in young Goku's naked genitals, which is fine, because that's how it appeared in the original manga. But then they go and censor "the middle finger", essentially changing that part of the story to something that is not in the original manga. They also censor, REDRAW, certain female body parts.

It seems so pointless to go through the trouble of creating a "definitive" edition, but then go backwards and make it "un-definitive".

The content of this book looks a bit childish. If someone is learning English, this always means textbooks with childish contents. I thought the 'Business English Books' would be different, but it is almost the same. However, the exercises are not really helpful, the audio cd is good.

Topics include: meeting people, telephoning, presentations, socialising, describing products and trends - each in easy-to-use units that can be used as on-going training, or stand alone modules. It makes great use of sketches and role plays, and references to actual companies and situations and for a trainer with little business experience it is easy to use.
Its partner "Business Opportunities" is directed towards higher level learners, and frankly there is not an English training organisation that I know who is not basing it's business English course around this book. A must!

It is written for readers who have studied at least two years of college-level mathematics. With carefully crafted prose, lucid explanations, and illuminating insights, it guides students to some of the deeper results of Boolean algebra --- and in particular to the important interconnections with topology --- without assuming a background in algebra, topology, and set theory. The parts of those subjects that are needed to understand the material are developed within the text itself.

 

Highlights of the book include the normal form theorem; the homomorphism extension theorem; the isomorphism theorem for countable atomless Boolean algebras; the maximal ideal theorem; the celebrated Stone representation theorem; the existence and uniqueness theorems for canonical extensions and completions; Tarski’s isomorphism of factors theorem for countably complete Boolean algebras, and Hanf’s related counterexamples; and an extensive treatment of the algebraic-topological duality, including the duality between ideals and open sets, homomorphisms and continuous functions, subalgebras and quotient spaces, and direct products and Stone-Cech compactifications.

 

A special feature of the book is the large number of exercises of varying levels of difficulty, from routine problems that help readers understand the basic definitions and theorems, to intermediate problems that extend or enrich material developed in the text, to harder problems that explore important ideas either not treated in the text, or that go substantially beyond its treatment. Hints for the solutions to the harder problems are given in an appendix. A detailed solutions manual for all exercises is available for instructors who adopt the text for a course.

Superb introduction. (But one lecture is somewhat confused.)

As always, Halmos is an excellent expositor. The brief first chapter has been known to scare away physicists and other intelligent people who don't happen to know ring theory, but fortunately the first chapter can be skipped. The book is at the right level to be used by mathematics graduate students learning Boolean algebras and Stone spaces for the first time.

Some people draw a sharp distinction between the concepts of "Boolean space" (a totally disconnected compact Hausdorff space) and "Stone space", the difference being that a Stone space is the Stone space _of_ a Boolean algebra. A Boolean algebra's Stone space is the space of all of its 2-valued homomorphisms with the topology of pointwise convergence of nets of such homomorphisms. That every Boolean space is the Stone space of some Boolean algebra (namely, the Boolean algebra of all of its clopen subsets) is one of the important facts of "Stone's duality". Halmos never mentions the phrase "Stone space", but he proves the basic facts about "Stone's duality": that the category of Boolean algebras and Boolean homomorphisms is the opposite of the category of Boolean spaces and continuous functions.

The one lecture that is somewhat confused is #21. I wrote earlier "Much of that section is founded upon an error -- that a Boolean algebra may have various non-isomorphic completions, of which one is 'minimal'". Someone has pointed out that Halmos does not actually say that any non-minimal completions actually exist, and that he proves a proposition at the end of Lecture 21 that entails that they do not. I doubt that many reasonable readers would think that Halmos didn't think that are some non-minimal completions. On page 93 he writes that all minimal completions are isomorphic to each other, but he never gets around to saying that all completions are isomorphic. Then, on page 96, in exercise 4, he says "Prove that B and C are in a natural sense completions of A", where A, B, and C have just been defined. The two Boolean algebras B and C are quotient algebras that Halmos showed on pages 67--68 to be non-isomorphic. Does this mean he believes non-isomorphic completions exist? Or only that the "natural sense" in which B and C are both completions of A is not the same sense of "completion" defined in the foregoing lecture? The latter is possible, but one can only wish Halmos had said so.

One other minor imperfection irritates me: Halmos uses the word "non-atomic" rather than the much better term "atomless". The problem with "non-atomic" is that it may be mistaken for "not atomic", and that is a quite different thing. And he first says that a certain Boolean algebra is non-atomic one page before he defines that concept.

Very impressive book to read! This is very helpful book. I am about to take the course online but I am glad to have found this book. I know that this will help me with stress and be more productive with work and life.
