About the Author
John Elliot wrote the first-ever article on how to use oil pastels for American Artist magazine in 1983. He has work in the collections of The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Smithsonian/ National Collection of Fine Arts. His commissions include works for Ronald Reagan and Katharine Hepburn. He lives in Upper Nyack, New York.

Figurative Sculptor

As a figurative sculptor I know how to draw and I have been perusing various art books looking for an interesting new medium in which to draw. This book managed to convince me that oil pastels are just the thing.
John Elliot has included sufficient information in this book to allow an artist to work in this medium. This book contains a lot of practical advice on materials and oil pastel techniques. To integrate this information it contains six illustrated demonstrations that walk though a drawing from its beginning to its completion. In addition the book is well laid out and contains extremely numerous photographic illustrations.

good introduction to oil pastels

The author is a pioneer and talented artist in oil pastel.He gives very valuable info about this medium--a long forgotten and underrated, even though promoted by Pablo Picasso...The book ,however, is 'sketchy' in details and techniques.The illustrations and art work are excellent, but somewhat repetitive...A good introductory book for enthusiasts of oil pastels and beginners, till a better book is written by someone else---after this medium becomes better used and established in the fine art world.Soft pastels have been with us for many decades, thanks to Degas and Mary Cassatt...Oil pastels are still to be pushed by great masters....Fortunately oil pastels are available at various price ranges for students and professionals...One learns more by trying different brands rather that sticking to just a few brands---Holbein or Sennelier...

With increasing concern for toxic dust particles from Soft pastels, oil pastels would be more widely used and this book would serve the newcomers well.

fussy but fair

This book is a very good book expressly devoted to oil pastels-but that said, in comparison with the only other book on the subject that I know of, it is a distant second. (There are a couple other obscure ones which I haven't seen) My favorite is "Oil Pastel: Materials & Techniques For Today's Artist", by Kenneth Leslie, 1990, Watson-Guptill Pub. Because it is out of print & only available second hand at inflated prices, unless Amazon can bring it back in print, or you are prepared to pay inflated prices (for something you cannot see & evaluate for yourself in advance), we are left with the book by Elliot.

Elliot covers a moderate (compared with Leslie!) amount of basic info & gives you a look at the oil pastel works of other artists as well--something I consider very important, especially if the author's work doesn't grab you, & also because you get to see how other sensibilities handle the medium. And he gives a taste of the history of oil pastels; he talks about various papers, etc; he mentions only two brands: Sennelier & Holbein (both premier brands) but there are others he does not mention which are evaluated in Kenneth Leslie's book. Leslie gives you a ton of facts & ideas: shows you how to make your own oil pastels if you desire, & how to prepare paper, etc., for receiving oil pastels (whose oil content can deteriorate paper) & lots of other info very useful for anyone wishing to know technical stuff about the medium.

Elliot's book is a good companion to the one by Kenneth Leslie, & I consider myself fortunate to have both. But if you could only choose one, & it were available, I would choose Kenneth Leslie's book!

Extremely entertaining and thought provoking

I became a fan of Brad Thor after I read 'The First Commandment' and could not wait for his next one. There was a very nice lady at Simon & Schuster who heard my cry and sent me a copy of this one and it did not disappoint!! Of course this one will catch a little flack because it raises some questions about the religion of Islam and questions the validity of Muhammad and the Koran. I loved how Brad interwove history in with the story and about just how long this war with some of the homicidal, radical Muslims has been going on. This is a mystery, suspense, thriller rolled up in one!

I love authors who have that special "it" that make you keep reading and reading and makes you take an extra 5 minutes on your lunch just so you can finish the chapter. The kind of writing that actually makes you tell your wife, "Hold on baby I'll hook you up after I finish this page!" Yeah, this book is THAT good! This will definitely be one of the best political-thrillers you'll read this year and will, if you aren't already, make you a die-hard fan of Mr. Thor!!

I'm not a big non-fiction reader but I love history. So I really appreciate when an author takes history and makes it fun, interesting, and not so freaking boring! I know authors (including this one) take liberties with history and the re-telling of it, but I can live with that because it just makes me go out and see if what they say is true. Did our former Presidents know about the Muslim invasions BEFORE this country was even a country? Did Adams and Jefferson know something and leave us clues to help us? Did our forefathers know how completely stupid, impotent, and P.C. our leaders would be (have) become?

I say YES to all 3 but you'll have to read this book and do your own research to figure that out. Either way 'The Last Patriot' is one heck of a book and a must read for this summer and seasons to come.

Thor KNOWS how to write a controversial thriller...and this is IT

The character of Scot Harvath has been one of my recent favorites in the last 3-4 years since discovering Thor's books, and 'The Last Patriot' virtually cements this bold character into (at least MY version) of great leading Action/Adventure Hero's.

Controversy is nothing new to Brad Thor by any means...however, with that said, I believe he is courting a whole new set of problems, or seriously potential problems with the storyline here. Religion in general is a very touchy subject, but as we have seen over the last decade or so, even fictionalizing specific events in Muslim History can be viewed as MAJOR Blasphemy--the kind that involves life-threatening retaliation. Don't believe me? Anybody remember Salmon Rushdie's 'Satanic Verses'? 'Nuff said. I heard an interview done with Thor on Glenn Beck and I'm not the only one concerned here. I honestly feel that if somewhere, sometime soon if I read about Brad Thor being the target of Terrorists, well, let's just say it won't surprise me (read the book and you'll understand).

The book, though is a hum-dinger of a story. Easily Thor's best-to-date. Like other reviewers, I like when events in history are tied in with current storylines, and I REALLY like it when its done right...and I am happy to say Thor really nails it with this latest installment. Action on top of intrigue firmly attached to a healthy dose of adrenaline mixed with a Titanic-sized load of action and you have an idea of how well constructed 'The Last Patriot' truly is. I have enjoyed these books a lot since I first began them, but this one seriously places the bar at a level that is amazingly high compared to the previous Tales of Scot Harvath--and THEY were great, if that tells you anything.

One thing I enjoy in particular about Harvath is that no matter how death-defying his exploits end up being, I always find myself thinking that were I under similar circumstances, and I had Scot's talent, what Thor describes is pretty much dead-on with how I feel I would act and say--or at least what I'd like to THINK I would act and feel if our roles were reversed--which I am glad they aren't.

For those who are fans of how Cussler takes historical events and weaves a seamless tale of adventure into a modern tale of action, you honestly owe it to yourself to give Brad Thor a try--and while you don't HAVE to start at the beginning to appreciate each book, I personally feel that by starting with 'The Lions of Lucerne' you will get a much better appreciation not only for the character of Scot Harvath, but you will get a ringside seat to Thor's growing talent for storytelling that just gets better with each book...no REALLY.

Kudos to Thor for not just a good addition to this series, but EASILY the best to date by a country mile...and that's saying a LOT.

exhilarating thriller

Former Navy SEAL thirty-seven year old Scot Horvath has left Homeland Security to get out of the covert operations business and start a fresh new life away from mass murdering terrorists who claim their ideology is blessed by God. He wants a normal life and feels as he closes in on forty undercover operations is a younger persons game. He also remains shook up that his significant other former Naval Explosive Ordinance Technician Tracy Hastings lost an eye and almost her life and almost died at the hands of some rabid avenging assassin.

They talk at a Paris café when Scot notices an Arab setting off an IED that targets University of Virginia Professor Anthony Nichols, who as he vanishes turns out to be a lot more than a highly regarded history teacher. The two retirees soon learn of the discovery of a seventh century version of the Koran in which the Prophet Mohammed informed his disciples of a radically different vision than that found in the Koran of today; if the lost revelation is published the Jihad extremists would lose much of their religious claims. Clues lead to President Jefferson's war on the Tripoli pirates and the third president's notes in an original copy of Don Quixote. Although they expect to learn more investigating Monticello, the American in Paris and President Jack Rutledge must end their estrangement caused by the incidents in his last assignment (see THE FIRST COMMANDMENT) while the Muslim extremists want the two Americans stopped.

This is an exhilarating thriller mindful of the Da Vinci Code but different that will hook the audience from the moment that Scot and Tracy learn of the lost revelation and never slows down until the final incredible spin. A critical key to this engaging tale is that the romantic relationship between the lead couple is limited as the inquiry and safety supersede everything. Brad Thor provides a strong insightful tale that links seemingly unconnected historical dots leading to the contemporary sleuthing by Scot and Tracy; accompanied by enthralled fans of the series.

An updated edition is needed

The Techniques are essential to know for any Cognitive Behavioral Therapist. The research basis for each of these techniques is spelled out clearly, and simply. CBT therapists often forget where they came from, the foundation on which the behavioral part of therapy is needed. It is a shame that the fields of behavior analysis and cognitive therapy have split...both are needed to provide the most effective therapy. The field is so large and human problems for which techniques are relevant are so broad, that we need to train students on the basics. This is one of those basics first texts.

Hinkley said "each of us has to face the matter -- either the church is true or it is a fraud.  There is no middle ground.  It is the church and kingdom of God or it is nothing."  The prophet seems wrong about this.  This study alleges there is a middle ground.  The evidence did not prove the church to be factually true or factually false.  It proved that the church may be true at a moderately low level of likelihood.  This finding would support the religious position, "believer based on faith."

It is common for philosphers to describe man as the "explaining animal."  Evidence from before written recorded history strongly suggest that we have attributed to supernatural forces that which we could not comprehend by other means.. Religion has been at the center of these efforts for every culture we have studied.  Phenomenological verification has emerged later in our development of science to help us understand what our senses do not immediately reveal to us.  A natural and dynamic tension has grown between the two approaches,Dr, Widdowson has produced a study of one of the world's most recent and fastest growing religions - Mormonism or The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.  As Widdowson points out, scholars have examined the foundations of the Mormon church since its beginning in the 1830s.  These foundations are based upon the revelations and prophesies of Joseph Smith.This methodology Widdowson uses is a particular approach to probability based on Thomas Bayes (1701-1761) theorem.  Bayes' theorem (alternatively Bayes' law or Bayes' rule) has become important in the mathematical manipulation of conditional probabilities.This is not the first time that Bayes theorem concerning probability has been applied to religious questions.  Stephen Unwin, a theoretical physicist with a PhD from the University of Manchester applied this methodology in his book "The probability of God" in 2003.Widdowson's takeoff point is the Mormon assertion (belief) that theirs is the "true church" - that a member"knows" the divinity of the church.  Hence, and examination of truth or fact is relevant.  He contrasts religion as a metaphysical connection with God based on revelation, inspiration, and historical methodology with science which studies organized religion attempting validation based upon evidence.  He describes five positions from which to view God.  These are Knower, believer, skeptical inquirer, agnostic, and atheist.  The knower is convinced that the evidence has reach the level of established fact; whereas the believer views the evidence as not factual, but sufficient to make the "leap pf faith".  Skeptical inquiry is essential in all fields of scientific examination.He clarifies the assumptions used in the application of Bayes theorem of probability, examines the leading critics of this approach, and then explains his refinements to the methodology to make a better fit to the critical task he is attempting.  All assumptions based upon historical writings, philosophic examination, and scientific evidence start with a given probability at the 100% level.  He then adjusts this probability downward based upon the strength of evidence: physical - historical necessity, direct physical evidence, unbiased or counter-biased corroboration, the credibility of critical accounts, and the care with which eyewitness accounts were prepared.  His methodology flows from these premises.An important point emerges early.  Any view of Joseph Smith's personality characteristics must rest upon an understanding of the cultural climate from which he emerged.  The historical record suggests that Joseph's gifts for creative imagination were both fostered by and creatively reinforce within the culture in which he and his early confederates were immersed.Widdowson does a good job of helping the reader to understand what is meant by the concept of Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) and how Joseph Smith's personality expressed many of the features of that concept.  Carefully examining the historical record, he shows us that Joseph Smith's described behavior is consistent with a diagnosis of Narcissistic Personality Disorder.He also introduces us to the concept of the Fantasy Prone Personality.  This is a psychological concept with which I was not previously familiar.  Wilson and Barber's development of this concept seems observationally sound and valid on its face.  Moreover, it would certainly seem to apply to what we know of Joseph's historical development.Widdowson's treatment of the role that polygamy played in the early development of the Mormon Church, perhaps the church's most controversial chapter, is fascinating.  He lays out how self-interest, or to use a word from science, bias, can creep into an otherwise righteous enterprise - the foundation of a new religion.  Joseph appears to be both deceptive and inter-personally exploitative in the way he introduced polygamy.  First it was hidden.  Then the rationalizations were emboldened.  Finally, intimidation and punishment were deployed.  Yet he continued to direct the process through the subtleties of mandating prayer with the assumption of negative meanings given to non-compliance.  It is interesting to consider how long it took before the convenience of these spiritual rationalizations were finally abandoned.Widdowson brings this book to a strong close.  He reviews the ways in which researcher bias can creep into results.  In presenting his conclusions, he demonstrates how Bayes probability theory produces the likelihood of result from uncertain information.  Finally, after summarizing his conclusions, he characterizes the significance of the 10 most important findings.  --L.J. About the Author
R. Keith Widdowson has a PhD in psychology from the University of Utah. He has written about the ecology of mental illness. He has dedicated a large portion of his professional career to helping veterans, including establishing a nonprofit corporation to provide rehabilitation services to veterans. 

In addition, to his clinical and management responsibilities, he was an EEO investigator for the Veterans Administration. In this role, he took complainant and management witness evidence under oath, evaluated the culture of the institution, analyzed the evidence and reported to the Central Office.

Dr. Widdowson is currently retired from his position as chief of outpatient psychiatry services at the VA Medical Center in Salt Lake City, Utah.  He is a former member of the LDS Church and has two sons who have also left the church. Keith spends his time managing his various real estate holdings in Utah and reading and writing about the sociology and psychology of religion.

Best Book Ever Written On The Subject Of Mormonism

As an attorney I am accustomed to critical reading and always consider an opinion just that, an opinion. This book was written as a neutral presentation as to facts and probabilities, not opinion. Dr. Widdowson does a comprehensive analysis of timelines, Mormon doctrine writings and witness statements.
His analysis is presented as it would be presented in a courtroom. An incredible chronological presentation not of negative or positive, just facts. I have read several papers and books on wheather Mormonism or any religious theme for that matter may be real or just someones incredible imagination. Most were bias either for or against the particular subject. Dr. Widdowson's book is by far the best analysis of the creation of Mormonism. The book has is simple thesis, what is the probability and accuracy of witness claims, and statements the credibility of each, and the probability of it's veracity.

No so much "disciplines" as they are dimensions of a mindset

The last time I checked, Amazon US sells 45,249 books that focus on business leadership. Why another? Because, just as in residential real estate for every home for sale there is a buyer, for every aspiring business leader there is a book. And just as in residential real estate the needs, interests, and circumstances of potential buyers vary, the same is true of those who seek the information, insights, and counsel they need. Fortunately, Amazon provides an abundance of feedback from those who have purchased business books on leadership. Brian Tracy has written more than 50; Peter Chee has co-authored several but brings other, equally impressive qualifications to this collaboration. They are eminently well-qualified. That said, it remains for the potential buy to carefully consider (a) her of his specific learning needs and then, given those needs (b) which sources seem most appropriate.

What we have in this volume is presumably everything that they have learned (thus far) about how great leaders not only achieve but then sustain high performance. Because throughout history (with rare exception), great leaders have a "green thumb" for "growing" others as leaders, Tracy and Chee have much of value to say about the importance of leadership development to sustainable high performance by an organization. The also include an "Action Exercises" section at the conclusion of each chapter and it serves two separate but related purposes: the material reviews key points for consideration and also suggests specific actions that will enable to improve specific skills through application.

Loving this book! I am so glad I found it. You will find nuggets of inspiration tucked into each page. Success takes work but Tracy and Chee team up to give you the steps you will have to take to make your dreams become a reality! Definitely worth the money. (Side note, I found listening to the audio version during my commute very beneficial.)

A BIG litttle book

"12 Disciplines" is an excellent work and one of the broadest looks at the essential elements of leadership. It is the equivalent of a tome without the burden of 1000 pages. The authors use just the right amount of "stories" to illustrate their points without belaboring. for a relatively small book, this one has lots of value !
