Excellent book for lesbian couples

I read this book from cover to cover in a few days. It is well written in an easy to read conversational style. Dr. Corwin is a clinical psychologist who has written this book for the lay public but it would be helpful for clinicians as well. She is different than many writers on this topic in that she describes both the published academic research and clinical examples. She has made the research accessible to her audience with her easily understood descriptions of the findings. Her book makes many good points and covers relevant topics that contribute to sexual issues in couples including desire discrepancy,body image issues,sexual abuse issues, aging and hormones, fidelity and parenting. She gives many helpful techniques that are backed both by research and clinical cases to help a same-sex couples maintain their sexuality. The activities at the end of each chapter can help couples begin to be aware of their patterns and start talking more openly about the issues. I have been working with both straight and gay couples for years, have read most of the sex therapy material and was impressed by how much I learned that I had not known before. Great book!!

Excellent, thorough, inspiring, memorable, specific

I read this book a while back (8 months ago?) and have re-read bits here and there (I rarely re-read books). This deserves 5 stars, period, without a shadow of a doubt. Glenda Corwin has been a therapist for 20 years as of the writing of this book, and specifically focusing on lesbian couples for 10 years. Every single chapter includes one or more very interesting and helpful case studies from her own therapy work, combined with scientific studies / statistics - which is an excellent combination in itself. On top of that, she just has a very good understanding of what she is writing about, and this book is very well-articulated and well-organized.

The introduction starts the book off with the idea of "lesbian bed death," a term she only mentions once. The theme of the book is how to maintain sex in long-term relationships for female couples. She starts off with some fascinating statistics comparing the rate of "bed death" between straight couples, male couples, and female couples. Now, I've never been in a long-term relationship myself, so it wasn't helpful for me in that sense (so far), but I nonetheless found the book very interesting personally as well as for general thought/knowledge. Even though the theme is for long-term relationships, it's easy to see how each issue is relevant to those of us who are less experienced or single as well.

She is very thorough and covers every topic I could think of that pertains specifically to women and then more specifically to queer women: body image issues, fear of talking about sex, aging, orgasms, socially learned passivity, devaluing of sex, cheating, etc. I love how she really makes it clear how these issues are specific to women and queer women, mostly by talking about how society has created them: how our society devalues older people - especially women, how our society views women's bodies, how our society teaches women to be passive and ashamed of sex and sexuality, how our society teaches us that romantic love should just happen to us, etc. If you are struggling in a long-term relationship, I think you will find this book very helpful on an immediate level in sorting out what's wrong. If not, this book is great for a broad awareness of potential issues you will encounter and to come back to.

It's not as fresh on my memory now and I need to re-read the book, but when I first read this book, I was raving about it... it has really inspired me to start many a conversation about sex positivity within the queer women's community, and most of the women I talk to are really fascinated when I start telling them about this book. I attended a desire mapping workshop recently, am about to facilitate a discussion on sex positivity for queer women next month, am attending a sex positive conference this weekend, and am now organizing a series of events to get queer women comfortable talking about sex - none of which I'd be doing right now if it weren't for having been inspired by this book. It really convinced me how important this issue is.

Glenda Corwin also ends the book by stressing the importance of sex. A lot of women tell themselves that sex isn't important, or that "lesbian bed death" is "normal," but what makes it a sexual relationship as opposed to a mere friendship if there's no sex? Many women find out the hard way when one partner ends up cheating in an otherwise perfect relationship. That might be the point that stuck with me the most. Sex is important, y'all. Start talking about it! Read this book! I still recommend this book to all queer women.

A terrific, thought-provoking read!

Sexual Intimacy for Women is a must-read book, whether you're just beginning to explore yourself sexually or whether you consider yourself more experienced. Dr. Corwin uses a combination of scientific evidence and clinical experience and examples to tackle some very difficult and private issues. Topics include body image, aging, fidelity issues, sexual abuse, lesbian parenthood, communication, and orgasm. Another beauty of the book is that the chapters pretty much stand on their own, so you can read them in any order you wish. At the end of every chapter is an area entitled "Your Turn," in which Dr. Corwin puts forth thought-provoking questions that the reader can work through. Her style of writing is so easy and fluid that it's like having a conversation with a very close friend!

I, like some others, am writing not to complain about the book but the service. The page promotes an edition whose cover says 375 R&B hits and the description says "a hundred and twenty-five hits added to the second edition." Well, naturally I imagined this is what I would be getting but instead I got an edition which has 305 songs and says "over 250 hits". So I got jerked out of 70 songs. It may not seem like that big a deal but it is disappointing and it is, to some extent, false advertising.

You need airforce pilot eyesight to use this!

I played a few of the songs on guitar, and the chords seem correct but could they make the type any smaller? I don't think so! If you don't have the music right up close and with good lighting, a person (especially over 40!) can't hope to be able to enjoy using this book.

I was very disappointed--great selection of songs, but no hope to be able to use the book in a party environment.

One-Stop R&B

I've had this book over two years, and I've had lots of fun working my way through it (as well as jamming with friends). It's packed cover-to-cover not only with Stax and Motown songs, but also a lot of 70s soul and late 1950s rock. Virtually every big hit by Stevie Wonder, the Temptations, and the Supremes are here along with a lot of Otis Redding, Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston and the Jackson 5ive. I've found the arrangements are pretty accurate, and it's a lot cheaper buying the songs this way rather than in some other formats. This would be an ideal book to have if you are in a wedding or party band and are expected to know and play a dozen or so classic R & B songs.

There are a couple of caveats. First - this is fake book format. Fake books give you the chords and leads on a staff, but the rest of the song is up to you. Professional gigging musicians constantly 'fake' arrangements, and this should not be a problem if you are jamming to these songs. Second - Hal Leonard seems to have wanted to cram in as many songs as possible, limiting the songs to just one or two pages. This means the print is small, and will be especially irritating in a dim room. Third - there's no TAB for guitar. Normally I wouldn't complain about that, but when you're dealing with so many songs with tasty guitar parts, a little TAB would have helped.

Still, this is a great treasury of great songs. Anyone who grew up with Motown and Stax and who plays an instrument will love this one. Furthermore, there seems to be less overlap between this book and other Hal Leonard volumes than other collections I've seen, so there's a lot of value for the money.

Inspiring and insightful! (review by author of When Technology Fails)

When I started reading Nick Bunick's latest book,"Time For Truth",I must admit I was a little concerned that it would be mostly a rehash of material from two prior books, "The Messengers", and "In God's Truth". Instead I found that Nick's latest book contained mostly new material combined with just enough of the information summarized from those prior texts to provide his readers with sufficient background to grasp the material in "Time For Truth" without having read either of the prior two. What I found most inspiring was the inclusion of many powerful new personal stories of spirit's invention in Nick's life, a number of automatic writings (done in his own hand writing, but without any recollection of ever having written them), and several related passages written by others who are also quite obviously clear channels for messages from the inner world. These beautifully crafted and uplifting selections are clearly not written in Nick's style, and I agree with Nick's opinion that he is just not that good of a writer to be able to dream up poems and messages of their quality and beauty.

In several chapters, Nick voiced his concerns and doubts about including particular passages, and relays that his first inclination was to exclude some of those that I consider to be among the most valuable passages in this book. As he explains in the text, prior to making decisions such as whether or not to include a particular message from "spirit", Nick would often run them by his group of six "test readers" for their opinion. By including some of their personal dialog, and his own reservations about particular passages, he lends considerable credibility to those writings. As an MIT trained engineer, who has had several spiritual experiences that were at the same time just as wonderful as they were shattering to my western scientific belief systems, I can certainly relate to many of Nick's concerns about credibility, career, and reputation.

Thank you Nick for your bravery in putting your career and reputation on the line to bring us these important messages and blessings at a time when truth is so badly needed in our world!

It is indeed Time for Truth

Nick's book is a MUST read no matter if you come from a Catholic, Protestant or whatever Christian background (or even different faiths).

The topics he addresses are the topics I have pondered since childhood. Thank God Nick has put these issues down on paper.
He clarified and removed the big question marks we all had like the role of the women in the Christian Church, why celibacy or what really happened on the road to Damascus - just to name a few topics.

This book will hopefully make it to the Vatican to remove misunderstandings and century-old lies, open the path for reconciliation, and unite people all over the world in love and understanding of the divine truth.

Time for Truth sets the established record of Christianity straight and leaves the reader with much to ponder.

After 2,000 years, it is indeed Time for Truth!

I pre-ordered this book from amazon.com, I received it August 25th
The information in the book will help people shed the guilt and fear they have been taught in many Churches for 1600 years. How the Jewish people have been the scapegoats for the killing of Jeshua and the mass murdering of the Jewish population for 1600 years, which is still going on today, 6 million Jews were murdered in Germany during World War 2. How the words of compassion and Love have been distorted into words of Fear, guilt,control, & punishment, by the Churches for the control of the people. This book is about reclaiming who and what we really are, not what we have been taught to believe. We all need to be liberated from unnessary guilt, we are Divine Beings, we all have a part of God within us, all we need to do is go within, everything is already there that we need. The information in this book is very powerful and makes complete sense. The courage it took for Nick to come forth is much needed today,to risk public ridicule and his reputation takes a very deep belief in his Mission. A job well done, I highly recommend this book for everyone.

An Introduction To The Toltec Teachings

In the fall of 2000 I traveled to upstate New York to attend a retreat sponsored by Theun Mares, a Toltec nagal of the third attention. I did so in large part based on a series of books he had written, the first of which,Return of The Warriors, I had discovered quite accidently while casually browsing in a bookstore. My first reaction upon reaching for the book was one of skepticism. Was this another clever author attempting to jump on the Toltec bandwagon? I read the first few pages fully expecting by built in crap detector to go off, but it did not. Quite to the contrary, I left the store with the book convinced that I had found what I had longed hoped existed: an in depth examination of the the Toltec legacy. Like many of us, I was first introduced to the Toltec teachings through the books of Carlos Castaneda and potential readers of Mr. Mares will ask how his books mesh with the elegant words of Don Juan. They do so impeccably. Furthermore, they are texts, handbooks for the would be apprentice to the warrior's path. This book along with the others in the series, Cry of The Eagle and The Mists Of Dragon Lore, will answer many of the questions left surrounding the Toltec legacy, including its origins in ancient Atlantis. Mr. Mares writes with a clarity and conviction that cannot be denied. There is a ring of truth in these books that is very evocative, like an echo traveling silently through time. I came away convinced that I had been in the presence of one who knows where of he speaks. This does not happen every day. To the many loyal readers of Mr. Castaneda, may I suggest that a ladder has many rungs and that The Return Of The Warriors is another step in the unveiling of the warrior's path. With this in mind, I cannot recommend Theun Mares' books strongly enough. I can say frankly and without undue sentiment that they are gifts in the truest sense of the word.

Dare to live!

For many years I was enchanted by the Toltec world through the eyes of Carlos Castaneda. Then I discovered that there were more books on the subject by Ken Eagle Feather, Victor Sanchez and Florinda Donner. Still it wasn't until I discovered the works of Theun Mares that I began the process of feeling this as a Path with Heart and not as a romantic notion. This book changed my life and put everything Don Juan was trying to tell Castaneda into it's proper perspective. In my opinion this book is better than all of Castaneda's books combined for anyone who is seriously willing to tread the Warrior's Path.
And if you are willing to dare upon this wonderful path of joy and freedom which is also a path of no return, then know that you are not alone, and if you look hard enough, you will find many great friends along this lonely path who share your passion and love for life.

Self Importance

Compared to the Dan Juan's teachings in the books of Carlos Castaneda, there is something bizarre about Theun Mares's books. Not that they aren't interesting, but, not to overlook the obvious, he does seem terribly full of himself and self-important. His mystifying self-myth is a hoot, to put it most politely. Then, I don't see how all that twaddle by Mme. Blavatsky got into his books unless her ghost also wanted to get into the act. That aside, some of the Toltec teachings are, in fact, in these books of Mares, and one can derive some benefit from reading them, as the information is arranged as a neat inventory. However, the non-inventory of Castaneda's books, I feel, is far more to the point. It was not meant to memorize all the Toltec material like a grocery list. Something smells peculiar about Mares: his books read somehow like neo-fascist "warrior" cult material. For true Toltec Technology, read Castaneda, Ken Eaglefeather, Florinda Donner-Grau and Taisha Abelar. Victor Sanchez has something very good to offer, and the two books attributed to the man called Tomas are also very good. To go one step further, of you are really interested in Toltec ways, it will also be to your advantage to study the Aztec calendar. There is profound wisdom therein. Also it is to your advantage to find out about Mexican Curanderismo. I will recommend a book called "The Woman Who Glows in the Dark" by Elena Avila. You can learn something very important in that book. Mares is a strange one; interesting but strange. Something is severly warped.

Necessary Reference for Your SharePoint 2010 Farm

It is good from time to time to acquaint yourself with Microsoft best practices for the development tools/applications which you depend. As a SharePoint developer and administrator I make it a point to keep up-to-date on this subject. While I have read a number of Microsoft's published best practices, this is the first time I read the best practices for SharePoint. Designing Solutions for Microsoft SharePoint 2010 is the first book I read on my new Kindle Fire.

As developers we like to think that our years of experience will allow us to naturally know the best methods to choose when creating a new solution in any new tool or framework. This is not the case. Reality is, a method which works well under one framework may not work under the next. This is why it is important for us to educate ourselves with the best practices for each framework.

For example, you may have used SharePoint web services to interact with SharePoint 2007 via a solution created in Visual Studio 2008. This may not be the ideal method of choice when creating a Visual Studio 2010 solution that will installed within a SharePoint 2010 environment. The recommended method would be to utilize the Client Object Model or the Server Object Model depending on what you wish to accomplish.

If you are creating a new assembly for your SharePoint 2010 environment, should you install the assembly in the bin directory of your SharePoint web application or install it in the GAC? If you don't understand the cost/benefits for each location you might want to review this book.

It is inevitable that there will be a need to pull information from an external data store into your SharePoint 2010 environment. If so, you want to read up on using external list and Business Connectivity Service. BCS is new to SharePoint 2010 and offers a convenient method of connecting to external data stores. The first step is to configure and start this service in your environment then refer to this book to determine how best to utilize it.

Another new feature to SharePoint is the use of Sandbox. If you are a developer but do not have administrative access to SharePoint or do not have direct access to the application server of the farm you will have strong appreciation for Sandbox. It allows you to install your solution to SharePoint without causing unanticipated challenges should your code unintentionally become 'self-aware'.

If you goal is to manage your SharePoint 2010 environment using best practices, I highly recommend this reference.
