The End of Fatima

As always suspected, Fatima just might be about the end of the present world after all.

On June 13, 1917, Our Lady of Fatima said to Lucia, "I will take Francisco and Jacinta [to Heaven] soon, but you must remain a while longer. Jesus wishes to use you to make me better known and loved." With Sr. Lucia dying in 2005, "a while longer" ended up being another 87 years.

Taking its title from these words of Blessed Mary and graced with an illustration of the third secret of Fatima on its cover, A While Longer provides not only the synoptic retelling of the apparition, for the first time it situates Fatima in Salvation History and explains the meaning behind the apparition.

In A While Longer, Fatima and other major apparitions of the twentieth century are combined with Sacred Scripture in a unique way to unravel the meanings behind both the messages given through the apparitions and the passages in Scripture known for centuries to pertain to the end times. Fatima, the Divine Mercy revelation to Saint Faustina, and the apparitions of Garabandal and Medjugorje are synthesized with Sacred Scripture to explain:

  • the Elijah who is to come
  • the meaning of 'time, times, and half time'
  • the Great Tribulation and how it is cut short
  • the mark of the beast
  • the sign of the Son of Man
  • the Third Temple
  • the conversion of 'Israel'
  • and more.

Well written and thoroughly researched book on the end times.
By Kovar
Finally a book that answered so many of my questions about the end times! I have an open mind about end times ideas, so for me this book was refreshing as it offered a lot of explanations about the end times that I haven't read before. Those heavily `married' to other end times theories that this book doesn't adhere to of course might disagree with some of the points, but to me it is important that the ideas are backed up, and I found the explanations solidly supported and very credible (for example, the Biblical exegesis tool called Typology is explained and used).

The book very concisely breezes through Church history and then focuses on the twentieth century and along the way subtly blows holes in theories of a fourth secret of Fatima and its consecration not being done. As I read along, the book casually (almost nonchalantly, even) but convincingly explained the deeper meanings behind the Fatima apparition and provided answers to typical end times terms like the thousand years, the `short time of Satan' that comes at the end, the great tribulation and how it is cut short, that ever cryptic phrase `time, times, and a half time' (yes!), the Gospel being preached to the world, the coming of Elijah before Jesus returns, the final apostasy, the sign of the Son of Man in the sky - all of these end times issues and more were explained in a way that made perfect sense. The author even very cautiously offered speculation on upcoming key dates in Salvation History. Best of all, I am a Christian so I appreciate how it is not based on things like the Mayan calendar but leans instead on Sacred Scripture and (private) apparitions. I found it all very credible and I think it is a must read for those who are curious about the end times and just where we are on that timeline. After finishing the book and reflecting on it, I slowly realized I had been provided a lot of rock solid explanations to so many baffling end times questions, and I also came to realize how everything in the book had been seamlessly tied together to provide a cohesive picture of what is going on in these times. And seeing where we are in the end times, I feel I need to focus more on being a better Christian starting right now.

The best part (to me anyway)? I liked how the meaning of that mysterious phrase of Blessed Mary at Garabandal, "Three more popes and it will be the end of the times but not the end of the world" is given and now it finally makes sense! I have wondered about that for years!

And I have at times wondered why, if Blessed Mary said Satan was given one century, the twentieth, to test the Church, why does his time apparently continue even now, when that century is over? That mystery is resolved too! Five stars all the way!

A while longer
By Just an average mom.
It should be called Not Much Longer. I couldn't put it down. This is not a book of fluff. There obviously has been a lot of research and prayer put into this book. I would recommend it to anyone interested in the Book of Revelation and Our Lady's messages. Don't wait to read this one.

The modern mammal metropolis of Zootopia is a city like no other. Comprised of habitat neighborhoods like ritzy Sahara Square and frigid Tundratown, it’s a melting pot where no matter what you are, from the biggest elephant to the smallest shrew, you can be anything. But when optimistic Officer Judy Hopps arrives, she discovers that being the first bunny on a police force of big, tough animals isn’t so easy. Determined to prove herself, she jumps at the opportunity to crack a case, even if it means partnering with a fast-talking, scam-artist fox, Nick Wilde, to solve the mystery. This junior novelization features eight pages of full color inserts from Disney Zootopia, in theaters on March 4, 2016!

Disney does a Buddy Cop Movie... er, book.
By PocketSable
Zootopia is the story of Judy Hopps, a bunny rabbit from a small farming community who strives from a young age to become the first Bunny Police Officer. Finally achieving her dreams, she moves to Zootopia, the big city filled with Predator and Prey alike. Unfortunately, it's not all it's cracked up to be when her chief immediately demotes her to Traffic Duty. However, when an opportunity arrives for her to be involved in one of the biggest cases, she takes it immediately. The only catch is, she has 48 hours to solve it or else she'll lose her badge for good.

When I watched the trailer to the movie, I instantly fell in love with the idea of an anthropomorphic Disney buddy cop movie. So, when I seen the novelization I didn't hesitate to pick it up... despite the fact it looks less like a book and more like a leaflet you pick up from a travel agency. At 121 Pages (8 of those being color pages with screenshots of the movie and several pages only being half-pages) and with big print, it's a very small book. Which, means a very short read. Thankfully, it's a very, very enjoyable short read.

The book is a junior novelization, so it's not the most detailed or intricate writing. Thankfully and unlike some other junior novelizations, it's not dumbed down to the point of being insulting. Yes, there are some moments that took me out of the book for a moment by how much it was trying to sound like a kid's book, specifically with the overabundant use of the exclamation point ("She threw the giant donut over his head and around his body, trapping him inside. The weasel was stuck!"). However, these are few and far in between to be too annoying. Just know that readers who have an avid love of old style or new poetic style writing and don't like modern writing, might want to avoid this book. It's watered down modern writing at it's finest.

The plot was extremely predictable, however, that doesn't mean it wasn't enjoyable. It was more of an adventure than a mystery, as the actual 'twists' were too obvious to really hold any weight. The characters had some depth to them and some had nice character development. Judy (the bunny) and Nick (the fox) make wonderful leads as their by-the-book cop/sarcastic sidekick dynamic is both amusing and very reminiscent of shows like Castle and The Mentalist. There were some funny references to The Godfather (as anyone who has seen the trailers will know) and even a funny Frozen reference thrown in there that had me chuckling a bit.

The biggest surprise for me was the blatant overlying tones of modern day issues like racism. I'm usually not one to pick out "hidden meanings" or try to figure out if a writer was trying to say something else with their story but as an adult, it was so obvious it could as well have been smacking me in the face. Lines like "We reserve the right to refuse service to anyone", "You're not like them./There's a THEM now?" as well as a discussion on how Predators are 'Savages' and prey want them to "get out/go home" riddle the book, more so in the last half. I'm not sure if a child reading/listening would pick up on these messages or just associate them being bullied (which is another theme present in this book) but, an adult or a teenager definitely will pick up on these right away. I'm curious to see how the movie will portray these issues and what the reaction from audiences will be.

Overall, this is a really quick, really fun buddy cop story with an underlying theme. It's also got the cute Disney-like quality to it while still staying true to those crime drama tropes that I personally enjoy. If you don't want the entire movie spoiled, you probably should avoid this. However, if you want to know what the movie is about or just interested in a crime fighting bunny and her wise cracking partner, then definitely pick this up for a quick enjoyable read.

Love more than the movie itself
By EL
So my five year old boy is in love with the book. He used to read hardcover books and board books, but he started reading chapter books for the last 5 months. He especially loves this 'junior novelization' books because he thinks (and I think, too) that it is very cool to read a movie.
It is a very handy and thin book. It takes about 30 minutes for my son to read the whole book.
I love the fact that even a younger child can easily read (especially he/she watched the movie), and it is fun to read.
I am very happy about these 'junior novelization' books, and so far I own 'Inside Out', 'Zootopia', and 'Finding Dory'. And I'll buy some more for my son.

Daughter read it the day she got it
By Amazon Customer
My 8 year old read through this in one day, which was great because she then went on to lend it out to her cousins. Haven't seen the movie so she couldn't compare the two, but she laughed through it thought it was highly entertaining. A good and challenging read, she is an advanced reader and when she starts it's hard to get her to stop. This took her a day in a couple hour intervals.

Detroit's Historic Hotels and Restaurants (MI) (Postcard History Series), by Patricia Ibbotson

Detroit's population grew rapidly after the beginning of the 20th century due to the growth of the automobile and other industries, and the city became a tourist and convention center. Detroit was in its heyday in the 1920s when it was the fourth-largest city in the United States. Some of Detroit's larger hotels were architectural masterpieces, nationally known, and were the center of social

activities. Others were lesser-known second-class hotels now largely forgotten. Detroit restaurants ranged from the self-serve to the elegant. These hotels and restaurants, many of which are gone now, are preserved in nearly 200 vintage postcards, allowing the reader to take a trip down memory lane.

Kitchen, by Banana Yoshimoto

When Banana Yoshimoto's Kitchen was first published in Japan in 1987, "Bananamania" seized the country. Kitchen won two of Japan's most prestigious literary prizes and sold millions of copies. It is a startlingly original yet charming book that juxtaposes two tales about mothers, transsexuality, kitchens, love, tragedy, and a pair of free-spirited young women. (Grove Press)

From Library Journal
In this translation of a best-selling novel first published in Japan in 1987, the young narrator, Mikage, moves into the apartment of a friend whose mother is murdered early in the tale. What seems like a coming-of-age melodrama quickly evolves into a deeply moving tale filled with unique characters and themes. Along the way, readers get a taste of contemporary Japan, with its mesh of popular American food and culture. Mikage addresses the role of death, loneliness, and personal as well as sexual identity through a set of striking circumstances and personal remembrances. "Moonlight Shadows," a novella included here, is a more haunting tale of loss and acceptance. In her simple and captive style, Yoshimoto confirms that art is perhaps the best ambassador among nations. Recommended for all fiction collections.

A beautiful portrayal of grief
By Kindle Customer
I've seen some reviews that say the book seems childish, but I have to disagree. Simplicity can be exactly right and I think in this situation it worked perfectly. Yoshimoto creates a story filled with beautiful metaphors and musings on life after you lose someone close to you. This version actually includes two stories, not one, the first of which is called "Kitchen."

"Kitchen" follows a young woman after the death of her grandmother as she tries to find happiness and direction again. The writing is simple and at times short, but it seems fitting to someone who is grieving and gave the narrator an even stronger voice. I found the narrators love of kitchens especially charming and real. The thoughts and actions of the characters seemed so relatable and normal, like things I would do and say in the same situation.

I found the second story "Moonlight Shadow" to be even more touching and graceful. I underlined a good portion of the end, saving it up for my own purposes because the writing was that striking. In this story, Yoshimoto writes about a girl who has lost her boyfriend and thinks back on their memories as she tries to keep living.

I'd highly recommend this book. It was an easy read, done in a day, but the content was enough to keep me thinking far longer than that.

Comfort Food
By Dale Miller
Mikage Sakurai has had an uncertain childhood, losing both her parents while she was very young and being raised by her grandparents. Her grandfather, too, died when she was entering junior high. A few years later her grandmother dies leaving her alone, without any family.

As Mikage is contemplating what to do next, Yuichi Tanabe, a classmate who helped out at her grandmother's funeral, visits her. He invites Mikage to come stay with him and his "mother." Yuichi's mother Eriko turns out to be a transgendered former male (Yuichi's father). She works in a nightclub. With no particular plan or direction, Mikage decides to take up the offer and spends long days alone contemplating the ceiling while Yuichi is at class and Eriko away at work or sleeping.

Mikage adjusts to life at the Tanabe's and comes to value the friendship of these odd, nonconforming Japanese. Yuichi is moody and depressive, a needy soul who becomes deeply attached to Mikage's friendship. Eriko's style is high camp. She loves making frivolous purchases, especially electronic gadgets. Eriko loves Mikage with a kind of offbeat quasi-maternal affection. The household is shocked when Eriko is killed, murdered at the nightclub where she works.

While she is staying at the Tanabe's Mikage purchases a set of instruction books on cooking and immerses herself in a serious attempt to become a skilled cook. After Eriko's death, when she comes back to the Tanabe apartment and spends a few days with Yuichi, she prepares an enormous meal of numerous courses, which they devour over several hours.

Not long after Eriko's death, Mikage finds a dream job as an assistant to a well-known culinary author and television personality. She is asked to accompany the sensei and other staff on a trip to Izu Peninsula to sample the local cuisine. Mikage jumps at the chance.

Mikage leaves for Izu, but once there she phones Yuichi who has gone to an inn not far from Izu to be alone. He complains about the food at the inn, which consists entirely of tofu dishes. Mikage happens on a katsudon shop where the specialty is exquisitely prepared. On an impulse, she orders an extra portion to go, hails a cab and makes a lengthy trip to Yuichi's inn. He is surprised, eats the katsudon and declares it to be the best he has every tasted. Before she leaves to ride the waiting cab back to Izu, Mikage tells him obliquely that she would like their relationship to grow and deepen.

When she returns, Mikage receives a phone call from Yuichi who has gone to great pains to find out where she is staying. He asks her for her time of return to Tokyo and the platform where her train will arrive, promising to meet her. On this upbeat, optimistic note the story closes.

Kitchen is a GenX novel, its youthful characters severed from traditional relationships: family, marriage, career. In their place, they form deep, if not necessarily permanent, bonds of friendship, based on mutual help and acceptance between people struggling to get by in a fragmented world.

The kitchen serves as a symbol of peace and comfort, a place where Mikage can forget the difficulties that she faces and lose herself in her artistic creation. It also brings together the disparate personalities in a union based on shared enjoyment of food. Banana Yoshimoto handles this with great warmth and sensitivity. Her short debut novel makes for a touching, uplifting read.

This is one of my favorite books of all time
By drawingstars
This is one of my favorite books of all time! It's a great coming of age story that I'm gonna keep by my side for the rest of my life! It speaks on so many things and is just a really comfortable and great book. Yoshimoto's writing is honest and down to earth as she explores the main character. I love all the characters and their stories. The book also includes a second shorter story.

Amazon.com Review
In today's fast-changing marketplace, a business can't expect to thrive by just making products and selling them, argues Stephan H. Haeckel in Adaptive Enterprise. "It does not matter how good you are at making widgets if the market for widgets disappears or if your competitors offer dramatically new and improved widgets faster than you can," writes Haeckel, director of strategic studies at IBM's Advanced Business Institute. Instead, for a company to succeed nowadays, says Haeckel, it needs to know how to adapt to customers--even before they themselves know what they want. Haeckel lays out a strategy to create such a "sense-and-respond" approach that will allow companies to move quickly amid change. Among the key steps: companies must use innovative ways to gather information about customer needs. For instance, car manufacturers used video cameras in airport parking lots to discover that people often struggle to lift heavy suitcases over the high lower edges of trunks. In mall parking areas, the cameras revealed that shoppers had nowhere to put soft drinks they just bought. Now, low trunk edges and cupholders are standard features in almost every car. Because "sense-and-respond" is a relatively new business model formulated by Haeckel, the book is heavy on theory and slim on concrete examples. Nevertheless, Adaptive Enterprise has some good ideas for business leaders looking for an edge in a world where rapid change is the norm. --Dan Ring

From the Back Cover
"Adaptive Enterprise provides the clearest and simplest set of tools necessary for a long company life." -Peter Schwartz, Chairman, Global Business Network "Drawing equally on adaptive systems theory and his own corporate experience, Haeckel has created the first practical road map to guide us toward the adaptive enterprise. He has gone beyond the mantra of 'embracing change' to describe the operational and organizational processes needed to create and lead an adaptive business." --Christopher Meyer, Director, Center for Business Innovation, Ernst & Young LLP "The future belongs to firms that can have a rich dialogue with customers and provide personalized responses to their unpredictable requirements. Stephan Haeckel has written the definitive guidebook on how to design and guide organizations toward this goal." -George S. Day, Professor, The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania "Stephan Haeckel's sense-and-respond business model for the information age is revolutionary. Adaptive Enterprise presents an utterly persuasive case for doing business in new ways." -Ann M. Drake, Chief Executive Officer, DSC Logistics "Many books on how to cope with information-age discontinuity read like they are written for entrepreneurs and small businesses-they offer great prescriptions and say 'just do it.' Stephan Haeckel has written a provocative handbook that recognizes the enormity of the challenge faced by large, complex organizations whose leaders, no matter how progressive their thinking, need more help making the sense-and-respond idea work for them." -Thomas M. Hout, Senior Advisor, The Boston Consulting Group

Command and control in complex adaptive systems
By Bill Godfrey
If you are ready to accept the notion that complexity governs your external markets, but are not yet ready to accept that the same rules may apply inside your organisation, you may find comfort in this prescription. It purports to be about the distinction between a 'make-and-sell' organisation and a 'sense-and-respond' organisation. The first is production efficiency focused and second is focused on customer satisfaction. (What the author calls 'sense-and-respond' is in fact an unacknowledged version of the Kolb cycle or cycle of organisational learning cycle, so well examined by Nancy Dixon. It is essential to all forms of learning, whether that is applied to providing customer satisfaction or to playing a musical instrument)
Overtly he argues that the shift from a make-and-sell orientation to a sense-and-respond orientation is a major piece of unfinished business for organisations. The reason that he can argue this is that he 'bundles' the issue of customer responsiveness with the much wider issue of complexity and unpredictability in the environment - in other words, he argues that it is not possible to be truly customer responsive if you do not also recognise complexity in markets.
Beneath this surface argument that the new complexity requires new approaches and its characterisation as a move to 'sense-and-respond', lies the real issue, which is the defence of command-and-control from devolution of control, which the author characterises dismissively as 'communicate-and-hope'. The author develops a framework which is designed to retain the essential features of command-and -control, while building flexibility and responsiveness. He argues that forms of governance that challenge command-and-control have only been effective in smaller and simpler organisations than the giants with which he is primarily concerned. By extension, he argues that they can not work in such organisations.
The core of his prescription is the ability of central management to provide central direction to the organisation by the use of an analogy to 'fly by wire' technology. In other words, he advocates the use of modern technology to keep central management informed of unpredictable change so fast that they can respond appropriately within tight time deadlines. When a 'modular' approach to structuring organisations is added, he argues that they can respond effectively not only to the generality of customers but to particular customers. However, the question of relationships with internal stakeholders - employees - does not figure in his schematic, nor does the issue of external alliances and partnerships. Both (separately and together) challenge the capacity of command and control: it is not just customers and markets.

A practical methodology based on three key ingredients
By Alan N Hohne (alan.hohne@moore.edu.au)
How different it is to be a reader in 1999 of Sense and Respond by Stephan Haeckel compared to what it was as one of the subjects in the eighties of which he writes. Then, no formal Sense and Respond model. Just "make-it-up-as-you-go" - euphemastically called "being flexible".
Now at last, something more than rhetoric to rely on. For over two decades we have been promised competitive edge through technology investment, magic formulae for change management, super profits through continuous process improvement, market dominance through customer focus and a whole lot of other so-called "silver bullets". A whole generation of management by best-seller has meant that the more things change the more they stay the same. And why? Because they have all missed the truly unique elements of Steve Haeckel's formula.
Governance principles and reasons for being have been around for generations. Leaders who do more than communicate and hope are well written-up. Organisation theory based on a systems approach is not new and modular organisation structures are not original. Neither is mass-customisation or the steering of a business based on manipulation of data managed as a corporate resource so that business transactions are reflected in decision support systems. Learning organisations based on adaptive loops are common, customer-driven process re-engineering case studies abound and project managers don't survive if they don't keep track of who-owes-what-to-whom.
So what is unique about Steve Haeckel's brew?
First, like Harold Geneen and his "grandma's soup" of the seventies, he's cooked slowly, tasted often and stirred in small amounts of lots of ingredients when the taste was not yet right. But most importantly he has based his brew on good stock. From the start he realised that you can't revive corpses. He has admitted that corporate transformation (the process that changes a caterpillar into a butterfly) and not reformation (work with what you've got) is what's needed to deal with the real world of change (continuous discontinuity).
Second, he's produced a uniquely implementable version of an extraordinarily elegant commitment management protocol. He has thereby shown how to co-ordinate systematically the dynamics of 'who owes what to whom' in a way that enforces consistency with the governance principles and other policies of an enterprise. More importantly, he has demonstrated that the key to transforming a traditional business, so that it can thrive in an environment of continuous discontinuity, lies in equipping leaders to track the interactions of negotiated commitments to produce outcomes within the boundaries of the strategic intent of an enterprise. Not only has he dealt with the human factors of this critical equation, he has translated the sophisticated theory of commitment management protocols into robust practice and exploited hitherto ignored technology. The result is an order of magnitude more powerful than the business process re-engineering with which it is all to easily confused.
Thirdly, he has successfully integrated a carefully selected inventory of proven components to produce a result in which the whole is considerably greater than the sum of the parts. The finished work displays a lustre that only comes from extensive rubbing against the real world. Key to this outcome has been Steve's understanding of the organic nature of the system that is an adaptive enterprise. For him, the system that deals with the problem of responding to the unpredictable is more than a mere academic abstraction. Each ingredient he has introduced has had to stand up before hundreds of discerning critics - his own customers to whom he has been accountable for an 'outcome'. Steve has understood that an adaptive enterprise is a dynamic interaction between real people, innovative technology, sophisticated intellectual concepts, practical leadership skills and sound information management methodologies.
Neither one or all three of these unique elements of the Haeckel formula can magically make any old 'bus driver' a brilliant 'cabbie'. Nor, should they. This is not a book for the addicts of management by best seller. But any leader of a traditional corporation who can't 'sense' that Steve has got the problem right, who can't 'interpret' commitment management as a survival issue and who doesn't 'decide' to embark on an integrated journey of corporate transformation ought to 'act' in the interests of shareholders and make way for the present. The future is here and the early adopters of the Haeckel method of transformation will make change their ally and the unexpected their active business partner.
As a former CIO of Westpac Banking Corporation and after 25 years in electronic banking I offer a word of advice. If you operate a traditional business in today's market place you will ignore this book at your peril.

The Future of Service Industries
By Paul T. Kidd (paulkidd@cheshirehenbury.com)
Adaptive Enterprise covers two separate but related topics - mass customisation (customisation at mass production costs) and agility (capability to deal with changes in the business environment and the associated high levels of uncertainty). The book is primarily focused on service industries, where services can often be customised through organisational (re)configuration (hence the agility dimension). Most importantly, the book covers the difficulties of moving from make and sell to sense and respond - difficulties often ignored in cookbook style business books. The book also addresses application of systems thinking to enterprise design - an important topic that is not covered enough in business books. Those interested in agility will also find Appendix B useful. Here one finds a decision process to use when one is faced with significant uncertainty. Overall the book is refreshing in its honesty. After reading this book you might also want to read some follow-ups: Mass Customisation (Joseph Pine); Agile Virtual Enterprise (Ted Goranson) and Agile Manufacturing (Paul T. Kidd).
