Personally I didn't expect much from a book about Football Manager (even though I'm a fan of both the game and football in general). So imagine my surprise when this turned out to be witty, insightful and really rather well put together.

In fact, this is great read for football fans in general - whether they play Football Manager or not!

So So.....limited in content...

I was disappointed by this reference book because unless a pharmaceutical company chooses to participate in this manual, the medicine information is not there. For example I couldn't even find my own birth control much less my brothers cancer medication. HOWEVER, in the back of the book is a code which allows you a free download of the PDR APP for both Android or Apple OS device where you can easily reference a medication & quite frankly much faster for a business professional. I suggest the APP or the website for quick reference as this book is costly and limited in information.

This is not the PDR of the past which was a comprehensive listing of generic/trade medications. Less than useful, as it is nearly 1,000 pages less than the 2006 version. Unless you need an incomplete reference source, this is NOT the book for a comprehensive drug reference. I was simply looking for a "technology-fail safe" reference in the off chance my iPhone fell in the toilet. No luck here.

This book contains only some drugs. The only thing it is really good for is pressing flowers. As an example, it contains pages and pages of information on Fosamax, but nothing on Evista.

About the Author

Dr. De Sellers began one of the earliest cognitive-based learning framework courses for American college students in 1973 at Texas State University, incorporating both emerging theory and research-based practice from numerous academic disciplines.  Although carrying administrative duties, including Dean of General Studies and Director of the Student Learning Assistance Center, she continued to teach the course for 25 years.  She holds both an M.A. and Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction, with a focus on adult learners, from the University of Texas at Austin.  Currently she is president of Cerridwen, Inc., a counseling and educational consulting firm, and is a Licensed Professional Counselor with a specialty in pastoral counseling.    

 

Dr. Carol W. Dochen directs the Student Learning Assistance Center at Texas State University. In addition to her administrative duties, she has taught both the University’s learning framework course and first-year seminar course for more than 25 years. She is actively involved in state and national developmental education organizations and was a founding member of the annual statewide College Academic Support Programs (CASP) conference and the Texas Association for Developmental Education (TADE), of which she is a past president. She holds an M.Ed. in School Psychology from Texas State University and a Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration, with a minor in Educational Psychology, from the University of Texas at Austin.

 

Dr. Russ Hodges is an associate professor in the College of Education at Texas State University where he co-created and now teaches graduate courses in the new doctoral, master’s, and certificate programs in developmental education. Russ also coordinates the University’s learning framework course. Russ is currently serving his third term as chair of the Council of Learning Assistance and Developmental Education Associations (CLADEA). He is a past president and treasurer of the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA). Russ also serves on the editorial boards for the Journal of Developmental Education and the Journal of College Reading and Learning. He holds a M.Ed. in Counseling from the University of Louisiana Monroe and an Ed.D. in Developmental Education from Grambling State University.

Engaging account well-told and lovingly-researched

I am not a hardcore GWTW fan, nor a lover of biographies or history for that matter. That being said, Bestseller's Odyssey was a great read and I thoroughly enjoyed learning about the life and times of Margaret Mitchell's great work. I received an advance copy of Bestseller's Odyssey with few preconceptions and so was not surprised to discover how little I understood of the publishing industry. What I was not expecting was to be so intrigued by the nature and number of legal hurdles which Mitchell and her work overcame. Extending far beyond its initial print publication, this book details all those who shaped the ultimate path of Gone with the Wind.

Despite my original ambivalence (apologies all) towards GWTW, I found myself rooting for Mitchell as she struggled to protect her work and maintain her principled stance. My appreciation for Mitchell deepened reading how she overcame each successive challenge as she shepherded the book along its way. I chuckled reading the frequent excerpts from Mitchell's genteel yet fierce correspondence. The depth and breadth of this book was impressive and left me rueful for simpler, more civil times.

Excellent story of the story...

Co-authors Ellen F Brown and John Wiley have produced an incredibly well-researched and well-written book about Margaret Mitchell and her one amazing book, "Gone With The Wind". Brown and Wiley concentrate more on Margaret Mitchell, her husband John Marsh, and other members of her "team" after the book was written than of the actual writing itself. The writing of the book, hereafter referred to as "GWTW", was just the beginning of the story.

Getting the manuscript - which was in bits and pieces in envelopes scattered throughout the Marshes' apartment in Atlanta - to Macmillan Publishers in NYC and then into print in 1935 and 1936 took the efforts of author, publisher, friends, and family members. The most important members of Mitchell's "team" were her father and brother, both Atlanta lawyers. Margaret's brother, Stephens Mitchell, acted as her adviser on all legal matters from her initial dealings with Macmillan, through to movie contracts with David Selznick, and then foreign rights. Stephens, an older brother, survived Margaret who died after being struck by a car on Peachtree Street in 1949. Mitchell's husband was also an important assistant to her in her business dealings.

Because, basically, after the book was written, what followed after "creativity" were "business matters". Publishing rights both domestic and foreign, movie rights, and the all-important "sequel" rights. And, of course, the work of "selling" the book was also "business". Margaret Mitchell, a basically shy woman, did not want to do very much publicity for her book. She was polite to her adoring fans, answering all letters, but she would not "sign" books. She wouldn't speak to groups about her book and she wouldn't be interviewed, either.

But the MOST important thing that Margaret Mitchell would NEVER do was to write a sequel. She was adamant that the story spoke for itself and she refused to entertain any idea of continuing the story of Scarlett and Rhett beyond that final scene at the door. The trustees who managed her estate after her and John Marsh's deaths, did allow a couple of sequels to be written, but neither of them were particularly large sellers or critical successes.

Brown and Wiley are very smooth, competent writers. Their book was a pleasure to read. The text also included many family pictures of the Mitchells and Marshes, as well as of the agents and publishers and film makers who had helped to make both the book and the movie such world-wide successes. A very good book.

Superb read

While the whole book was phenomenal and informative, the last 3 chapters would make a riveting story in and of themselves. The ongoing saga of legal rights, responsibilities, and the struggle faced by her husband, brother, and later the trusts involved in handling her book and movie rights blew me away. All of this due to the unbelievable novel, Gone With the Wind!

Good choice for industrial design student

This book is intended to give an overview in simple and visual terms, serve as a guide and introduction to this rather complex manufacturing field. Designer must have a good understanding of all manufacturing processes abailable, in order to have confidence that the proposed manufacturing processes is the most economical and appropriate. So, the book tried to give an overview of all materials and manufacturing methods, in order to help students to visualize and develop forms that ultimately will be manufactured.
The contests consist of metal materials, metal forming, metal cutting, metal joining, appearance finishing and coating, plastic materials, resin forming processes, machining parts, joining plastics, finishing plastics, rubbers and elastomers, natural engineering materials, composites, and rapid prototyping.

Good as a quick reference

I disagree with the reviewer from TX. The book is written using terminology that any industrial designer should be familiar with. It would make a good textbook for design students because it gives an overview of many materials & processes. It also has charts and diagrams that make the information easy to digest. My criticisms would be that it could use more examples of final products and detailed descriptions of the materials & processes used, ie case studies. For the price, it is a thin book and could easily include a case study section. I would also like more elaboration in the "charateristics, uses and properties" sections for each material with common pitfalls to avoid.

From 1920 to 1950, in the process of nation-building, Baghdad was transformed into a true city built of brick, one that became the harbinger of the Arab architectural renaissance, its local traditions reinterpreted and adapted into a modern vernacular style. Caecilia Pieri's documentation foregrounds the physical reality of modern Baghdad, very different from the image that we normally receive from the media. She draws on a number of unpublished sources and documents, to present Baghdad's architecture in a historical perspective, and her striking photographs taken between 2003 and 2006 document the residential areas of the twentieth-century city, providing an unprecedented resource for historians, urban planners, and general readers interested in discovering a new face of a world capital. Caecilia Pieri, a senior editor at Editions du Patrimoine, Paris, is a scholar of architecture, urbanism, and cultural heritage. She has a PhD ib History of Architecture and Urbanism from the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (Paris). She has traveled widely in the Middle East for over twenty years.

Baghdad Art Deco

I liked the book but would have appreciated a few more color pictures ..especially of tile work...The vintage photos were great and you really got a feel for a Baghdad I had no idea existed. The cover of the book is spectacular... I would have liked to see more or that kind of workmanship on the interior... but I really liked the book. Pleased to have it in my collection
