The Islamist movement was a cycle, and the cycle reached its end in the 1990s –although the downfall had started well before. It will continue making noise; it might even become part of the political establishment in some Muslim countries; it will not, however, be the driving force of civilizational change. Islamism would continue making events but it will not produce history.

This book provides an under-surface view, which is more crucial for understanding Islamism than the political bubbling above the surface. It examines its major mental and cultural components, and its social evolution. In other words, this is a post-mortem examination of the Islamist movement that focuses on the roots of the malaise, rather than the ‘malaise in action’. The purpose of the book is neither guiding nor attacking; it is about gaining an overall and complete understanding of what was, by far, the biggest social movement of the 20th century.

The book is divided into five chapters. The three middle chapters constitute the core of the post-mortem. They show, among other things, that Islamism was not a truly religious phenomenon but a by-product of the western culture. “Islamic state” might be its motto, but modernity has been its main quest. It was also the by-product of the west by being a nationalist reaction. More generally, Islamism would not have emerged had the West (as we know it) not existed. This means that Islamism doesn’t represent a cultural continuity in Muslim societies; it is rather a historical rupture. In this respect, there is no fundamental difference between Islamists and secularists (in the Muslim world) despite their continuing political and ideological confrontations. Both are cultural ruptures; both are by-products of the West -in different ways though.

This book is a cliché-free, ideology-free and unbiased attempt to understand Islamism. It provides new ways of looking at it. The other originality of the book is that, unlike other studies on the subject, it is not placed in a western or secular framework of analysis. Unattached reason and religion, supported by the author’s direct observations in different countries, are the bases of the book.

Disappointing

This book was a total disappointment to me.

Over the last 2 or 3 years, I've bought a number of Ms. Hauser's books because her early "gay romance" novel - THE PHYSICIAN AND THE ACTOR - was such a 5-star standout in a genre which seems more and more defined by bad porn film dialogue and tired, ho-hum plots. A few of her more recent books - THE BOY NEXT DOOR, GIVING UP THE GHOST and FOR LOVE AND MONEY (worthwhile sequel to THE PHYSICIAN AND THE ACTOR) - have maintained the high quality of true romance evidenced in that first book. But now that she seems intent on publishing a book per month, others (for example: CRUISING, LOVE YOU LOVEDAY and - notably - TEACHER'S PET), come across as formulaic template with their only saving grace being that she does not usually give us the choppy, truly awful dialogue drivel ("Bed! Now! Want you now! Your hand! Here!") that other female authors in the M/M genre think of as typical gay pillow talk.

There was this beautifully balanced character interplay and sexual tension in THE PHYSICIAN AND THE ACTOR and the two guys (who WERE truly meant for each other) did not consummate their relationship until we had silently cheered them on for 200 pages. In TEACHER'S PET, the professor and his student have hopped into bed with one another after only 50 pages - way before the reader has gotten to really know them. I'm sorry but that's NOT romantic at all. And shouldn't a romance novel be, well, "romantic?"

As a mature gay male, I know I'm probably NOT the typical reader of or targeted audience for the recently developed (and possibly Yaoi influenced) M/M genre. I realize they're mostly written by women for other women. But, dammit, I just happen to like the idea of true romance in the lives of gay male couples to-be. It doesn't matter to me whether the splendor of romance and love-making is depicted by women authors like G. A. Hauser or by gay male authors such as Edward C. Patterson and J. G. Hayes (whose outstanding books, transcending M/M pulp, depict gay male love at its best, most believable - and, sometimes, most heartbreaking). After all I have identified with, read and loved the work of Patricia Nell Warren and Mary Renault over the years. As a gay male who reads perhaps 200 books a year, all I ask is that the characters, plot and dialogue ring true to me.

Hauser's THE PHYSICIAN AND THE ACTOR established itself as one of my favorite gay-themed novels. But most of her recent work hints that she has perhaps become more interested in the quantity of her work rather than its sustained quality. And that's a shame because she is truly capable of meaningful, memorable and literate story telling.

Waste of time, don't waste your money

Teacher's Pet is a paint-by-numbers formulaic piece of drivel. The male characters are at best two-dimensional, the plot is perfunctory, and even the sex cannot save this stale tale because the sex is boring. Boring sex? Yes, it is possible. Byt worse than that, it is ridiculous as the main character -- a young man of 22 goes in just a few minutes from being a shy virgin to being an aggressive top. Interestingly, given that the author is female and the audience for these books is largely female, is the fact that the portrayal of women in this book is deeply misogynistic. The women are either whores or harpies who drive the men to drink or to deep unhappiness. I stopped halfway through the book and have no urge to finish it.

Clunky writing and characters I didn't like

Rating: 4/10

PROS:
- Hauser does a good job of exploring the fear Jeremy feels about coming out. He has the (perceived) prejudice of his friends, his classmates, and his family to deal with, and it's a constant source of worry for him.
- Jeremy's friends and family turn out to be pretty cool and accepting (except for the girls at his school; all the young, single women in the story--and in many of Hauser's other stories--are just plain evil). The coming out scenes in this book are reassuring rather than painful.

CONS:
- I didn't love either one of the characters--not because they're bad people, but because I didn't have a lot of respect for them. I wasn't a fan of Kevin's resolve to sleep with Peter even though Peter is married, and Peter struck me as ridiculously blasé about committing adultery with one of his students. So Jeremy is irresistible...okay. But Peter calling him "babe" in front of other students and "grabb[ing] Jeremy's bottom playfully" in class? I used to teach at a university, and I simply can't imagine a professor being quite so obvious and stupid.
- The writing is wooden-sounding, mostly because there's a lot of description pertaining to the characters' actions, but not much about their thoughts. The book will say, for example, "he had a permanent smile planted on his face," but it won't go into much detail about WHY the character is smiling.
- There are a lot of scenes that don't seem to serve any purpose: they don't move the plot along, and they don't illuminate any situation or character trait that hasn't already been explained or established. The scenes with Jeremy's roommate and those with the girls on campus I found particularly tedious.

Overall comments: The relationship (as opposed to an involved plot) is the focus of this story, but the men's emotional connection felt shallow to me. I must admit to having skimmed large sections, and I found it difficult to finish the book at all. This is the second story by this author I've been really disappointed in; I don't think I'll be reading any more books by her.

Well-written exposition of lucid dreaming

I found this to be a well-written, interesting book, but not one of the most exciting or easy-to-read works on the subject of lucid dreaming.

It is a comprehensive exposition of lucid dreaming containing many references to and quotes by other relevant authors and psychologists.

Many accounts of lucid dreams are included, which add to the book's readability.

Gackenbach has found that there tend to be fewer characters in lucid dreams than in ordinary dreams. The dreamers sometimes interact with other dream characters in order to confront if not resolve psychological difficulties.

It is as if the dream characters had a consciousness of their own. “They behave as if they possessed their own perceptual perspectives, cognitive abilities (memory and thought) and even their own motivations.” – P. Tholey.

The authors tell us that many lucid dreamers (dreamers who are conscious that they are dreaming) are not aware that they may be able to control the content of their dreams. But even prolific lucid dreamers have noticed the limitations of dream control.

Kelzer is quoted as stating: “At best, the lucid dreamer is able to take charge of his (or her) personal experience within the dream but is not actually able to control the dreamscape itself to any great extent.”

We are informed about athletes who train in their lucid dreams, thus greatly enhancing their waking athletic performance.

There's a chapter about confronting your demons in lucid dreams. The authors quote Tholey with regard to advice to lucid dreamers who find themselves confronted with a fearful dream figure.

1.Do not try to flee from a threatening figure. Confront him courageously and ask him “Who are you?” or “Who am I?”

2. Try to come to a reconciliation with him through a constructive dialogue.

3. Do not surrender to an attack by a dream figure. Stare the figure in the eyes. If you have to fight, try to conquer the enemy but not to kill him. “Offer reconciliation to the conquered enemy.”

4. After reconciliation, ask the dream figure if he can help you. Then mention specific problems in your waking or dream life with which you need help.

Apparently, lucid dreaming can be addictive. Living in the dream world can become preferable to reality. (Another lucid dream author, Charlie Morley, also mentioned this.)

There is an interesting section about lucidity and healing, discussion of the similarities between OBEs and lucid dreams and the relationship between NDEs, UFO experiences, meditation and lucid dreaming.

We are briefed about the initial experiments confirming the validity of lucid dreaming and that it mostly occurs during REM sleep.

In conclusion I would say that this is a quite comprehensive account of lucid dreaming, including many dream examples, but I don't think I learnt anything new. In my view, it is not a “must-read”, but an optional addition to one's collection of books on the subject.

The Dirlewanger Brigade was an anti-partisan unit of the Nazi army, reporting directly to Heinrich Himmler. The first members of the brigade were mostly poachers who were released from prisons and concentration camps and who were believed to have the skills necessary for hunting down and capturing partisan fighters in their camps in the forests of the Eastern Front. Their numbers were soon increased by others who were eager for a way out of imprisonment—including men who had been convicted of burglary, assault, murder, and rape.

Under the leadership of Oskar Dirlewanger, a convicted rapist and alcoholic, they could do as they pleased: there were no repercussions for even their worst behavior. This was the group used for its special “talents” to help put down the Jewish uprising of the Warsaw Ghetto, killing an estimated 35,000 men, women, and children in a single day. Even by Nazi standards, the brigade was considered unduly violent and an investigation of its activities was opened. The Nazi hierarchy was eager to distance itself from the behavior of the brigade and eventually exiled many of the members to Belarus. Based on the archives from Germany, Poland, and Russia, The SS Dirlewanger Brigade offers an unprecedented look at one of the darkest chapters of World War II.

There is not a lot of books out there on Dirlewanger in English. French Maclean wrote one and that's about it that I know of.

This book is short and was probably written as a Doctoral thesis. The author tried to write it with a sociological/psychological slant rather than a straight history of the unit. That works in some places but reads like filler in others. He used three primary sources and filled in the rest with other research.

The author admits the source material is spotty and for some periods of time there is no record. This isn't unusual for a unit like this and he does do a good job of placing them when there is a record. Most of this was when Dirlewanger's unit was working specific named SS-Police anti-partisan operations.

The author also covers the units transfer to Slovakia towards the end of the war. He also covers the different versions of the unit as the personnel changed from the original convicted poachers to whatever material was available that no other unit would accept.

What did make me crazy was the author not stating what Police Battalion or Regiment Dirlewanger's unit was working with. I also thought there could have been far more information about his role in the liquidation of Jews and others.

Edit: I have a copy of the flight log for the pilot assigned to EG B that places Dirlewanger in the early stages of the war. He was, to me at least, being flown to locations to receive orders to sensitive to be transmitted any other way.

The book also mentions Hans Siegling, a man who was everywhere in the east when mass murder was required. What the author does not mention is his earlier work in EG A as a Hauptmann in a Police Battalion.

Psyschological study not history.

Rather dry with terribly long hunting analogies, non-linear chapters, no true history of the unit, very little detail of atrocities committed. Very bland history. This vook will not hold your attention and is a bore to read.

The Eastern Front has always captivated me, the sheer brutality and hatred on both sides, two warped ideologies battling each other and all the unfortunate civilians trapped between them. There is not much material available on the Dirlewanger Brigade so when I saw this it caught my eye. Overall, I found this to be an extremely difficult read. Nothing to do with comprehension simply I found the material to be extremely dry and it never held my attention for more than a few pages at a time. It's also more of psychological study of the Brigade rather than a straight history. Don't get me wrong, it is a very well written book, but I like my history more linear and more personal. There are also no pictures/maps, which was a disappointment. When reading about specific individuals/units I like to put faces with the names/words. I should have listened to the other reviewers such as Stephen Campbell. He is absolutely correct when he says "This book is short and was probably written as a Doctoral thesis. The author tried to write it with a sociological/psychological slant rather than a straight history of the unit.". While the book certainly does touch on the history its primary focus is the sociological/psychological aspects of how the Brigade was formed (from poachers, to criminals and finally even communists), it's motivations and its actions. If you enjoy reading Doctoral Thesis then you may find this book extremely interesting, personally I didn't.

Worth saving your money to just get the loose leaf version. The binder was busted up and some pages were torn at their holes. I cut the torn pages, re-punched the holes, and put the book in a new binder. In the end, I saved a lot and the book did the job well enough.

I am always glad to get more stories from this world. I wish there had been one or two more stories though. Three didn't seem like enough. My biggest complaint was that the ending was abrupt and didn't seem to resolve anything, in particular the titular character's education. Still if you enjoy the DemonWars this book is for you.

Do NOT buy this book! I would give it zero stars if I could. This has absolutely nothing to do with finance. There are no equations or theory discussed ANYWHERE in this book. I want my money back! The author should be ashamed of himself for being so deceptive. Especially at this price! This book is extremely pedantic and seems as if it was written 60 years ago. Thanks for ripping me off, Tim Harvard.

Eugene G. Windchy left the U. S. Information Agency’s Office of Policy to investigate the origin of the Vietnam War and wrote the book Tonkin Gulf. Since then he has written on national security for New Republic, Atlantic, Washington Post, Washington Times, Nation, and other periodicals. A widower, he resides in Alexandria, Virginia.

Mr. Windchy made quite an effort to locate me when he was researching his book on Tonkin Gulf. When he succeeded he arranged for us to meet for dinner at a Japanese restaurant. Later in the evening when he excused himself to go to the restroom a Japanese lady came to our table. She said she was the owner of the restaurant and wanted to tell me my friend (Eugene) was so accomplished in the Japanese language he could he carry on a two-level conversation in Japanese as if it was his native language. She said she had never seen any other non-Japanese person with that capability. The point was important because it identified Mr. Windchy's character. When he committed to a project such as: "Twelve American Wars: Nine of Them Avoidable," his research was meticulous and complete. His intent was not an exhaustive history of each war. Others have done that. He focused on the events, decisions, communication, and/or failure of communication that led to war. He avoided dramatic language, and where two or more sources disagreed he presented the view of each in a manner that allowed the reader to reach their own conclusion. The presentation on each war ended with; "Lessons to be Learned." In so doing he shifted the focus from the customary political and moral arguments to a very practical process that should appeal to anyone and everyone interested in U.S. foreign policy. I will go further then that and say it should be required reading for high level military personnel, government employees, politicians, and others who seek to influence decisions war.

This is a must read for anyone interested in the wars America has fought. Mr. Windchy has followed up his widely proclaimed book on the Tonkin gulf incident with this extensively researched and easy to read accounting of the people behind the policies and actions that led us into twelve wars,nine of which he brilliantly reveals we should not have fought. I know of no other book published that addresses this topic with such abundant and relative detail. This is a military history gem, not about trenches and guns, but about intrigue most have never heard of or suspected. This is should be included in every political science and American history course in American universities and military service academies. Without any doubt, he has earned five stars.

Highly recommend.

Eugene Windchy is to be commended for researching and analyzing the conditions leading up to twelve wars in which the United States has been involved. There have been innumerable books describing these wars, phase by phase. In most cases, we cannot learn from how the wars were fought. This book, perhaps, can give us food for thought on how to avoid war, save lives, and encourage peace in this world.
This book is recommended reading for our present-day politicians in Washington. I, as a concerned American, will recommend it to my friends, family, and associates.

A great guide to reaching the next level in your Jira implementation

Mastering Jira is an excellent guide to reaching the “next level” in understanding Jira to meet the needs of your organization. The book provides a comprehensive overview of virtually all the areas you need to cover to build your Jira instance maintain it. Some of the areas of interest I found immediately was the importation of CSV files into Jira using Javascript to show and hide fields based, and the use of built-in Notifications to make useful communication at any stage of a workflow in the issue lifecycle.

Achieving a balance in any given book is difficult. If there is too little coverage on a topic, the book does not have enough material to “master” the topic, if there is too much coverage on one single topic, the title is out of reach for someone getting starting and attempting to learn the application. I found that Mastering Jira I found was adept in achieving a balanced approach.

The only area that was covered in perhaps too much depth early was the Jira SDK discussion. Granted a further discussion of this is found at the end of the book, but a user covering the many topics Jira touches (Agile, JQL, Workflows, etc.) will probably have enough to learn and likely will not want to begin building their own plugins right away. On the other hand, a discussion about the Jira installation would not be complete without addressing the issue of development.

Why this book? You can find a lot of information on the web with regard to Jira. The real beauty of this text is all of the essentials are here in one location. As far as some unique aspects to the book, I found the use of graphs and screen shots to illustrate various topics was outstanding. The author also covers (though almost never discussed on the web) how to document your Jira instance and even conduct a business needs (Requirements) analysis that will make your Jira project match up what the user(s) requested. Lastly, the author provides wide variety of ways to create reports and suggests several use cases to assist the user in modelling and integrating Jira into a business environment.

You’ll find once you have completed the book you will be returning to it often as a resource as your implementation grows.

JIRA is an excellent tool, but to use it effectively one needs to see it through the eyes of experienced administrators who manage JIRA in complex corporate environments. Mastering JIRA introduces a reader to a strategy of using JIRA and to best practices. There are many ways to use JIRA, interact with it and improve it, but the most difficult part of any way is to know that there’s a way and to make the first step, and this book allows reader to make a lot of first steps in a ways that uncover real power of JIRA.
