In continuation of his voyage to the Dutch West Indian Islands St. Eustatius, Saba and St. Martin, about which particulars are to be found in the first part of the Flora of the West Indian Islands), the author undertook a second voyage in 1909 1910 in order to study the flora of the Islands Curasao, Aruba and Bonaire.

It was again on the suggestion of Dr. F. A. F. C. Went, Professor of Botany in Utrecht University, that this voyage was undertaken and it is principally owing to his exertions that the following corporations gave finantial support: de Maatschappij ter bevordering van het Natuurkundig onderzoek der Nederlandsche kolonien (Society for promoting the Physical investigation of the Dutch colonies), de Koninklijke Academie van Wetenschappen te Amsterdam (Royal Society at Amsterdam) which put the P. W. Korthals fund at my disposal, the Committee for the F. W. van Eeden fund, het Koninklijk Xederlandsch Aardrijkskundig Genootschap (Royal Dutch Geographical Society), het Xederlandsch Xatuuren Geneeskundig Congres (the Dutch Physical and Medical Congress) and het Provinciaal Utrechtsch Genootschap van Kunsten en Wetenschappen (Provincial Utrecht Society of Arts and Sciences); also the Botanical laboratory contributed towards the expense of transporting the plant collections in exchange for which it received the collections. To all these corporations I wish to express here my sincere thanks. Het Provinciaal Utrechtsch Genootschap van Kunsten en Wetenschappen again subsidized in order to have this flora printed.

Besides to the corporations mentioned the author is greatly indebted to Prof. Dr. F. A. F. C. Went and to his Excellency the Colonial Minister for his recommendation to the Governor of Curagao.

Using newly available letters, McGrath documents Freud's imaginative and intellectual development, albeit in generally Freudian (e.g., oeidipal) terms. Idealizing his reconciliation with a passive father, the book views Freud's turning away from politics as a dignified, realistic response to anti-Semitism, and glosses over his mistreatment of Breuer and Fliess. NLP for English teachers, but ok for anyone

This book give a very good introduction to NLP techniques, the aim of which is to use in the English (as a foreign language)classroom but I find the simple techniques useful for myself. Not like other "self-help" books, as it lacks the hype. Anyone who works with students, or perhaps therapy of any kind will find it helpful and inspiring.

I think that the two review here, as of January 2011, are what I would expect to see here. I understand both sides but lean towards the higher end.

I think that after having taken a couple of formal professional development courses in NLP for TESOL that I can appreciate what the goals are and why. I used these ideas in Japan a lot, the ideas the 1 star reviewer refers to and my students loved it. They were truly riveted in authentic communication as the activities do ask a lot of deep personal questions - ones that would be addressed in self-help books. Such tasks stimulate personal involvement. Seriously meaningful discourse was the result and a lot of inner-class rapport building. I have also used some of the ideas in the Middle East at a Men's Technical College, and they enjoyed discussing the meanings behind the listening as a puzzle - and got better at it, deciphering the metaphors within.

So, for me - an easy 5. If you have not played with NLP as an ELT I would also suggest having a look, and if the book is coming with a CD or Cassettes the heavy price tag is more justifiable than if not.

Love it. The best thing is the level of rapport that can be developed.

out of my hands - into the hands of the used bookstore

Are you a Leo Buscaglia fan? Are you stimulated by books such as Life Strategies, Don't Sweat the Small Stuff, or Take Time for Your Life? Do you think Oprah is an intellectual giant? If so, this is just your cup of tea.
For the rest of us, this book is not worth the time. It claims to explain how NLP techniques can be used in the ESL (ELT) classroom. What is NLP? Sorry to be so blunt, but to me, NLP is nothing but overblown self-help. I looked over two other books on NLP, and found nothing but generalities and a lot of nonsense. And they actually hold conferences on this stuff!
This book is filled with quotes and anecdotes I've already heard hundreds of times before. With the exception of a couple of exercises, everything in this book is obvious and too vague to be of any help. I've read many other books on ESL and this is by far the worst.
Want to read something really inspiring on ESL (ELT)? Try Learning Teaching by Jim Scrivener. Try A Course in Language Teaching by Penny Ur. These two books are much better than In Your Hands.

In "The Invention of Journalism Ethics" Stephen Ward argues that, given the current emphasis in the news media on interpretation, analysis, and perspective, journalists and the public need a new theory of objectivity - pragmatic objectivity - to enable them to recognize and avoid biased and unbalanced reporting. Ward uses ideas from rhetorical theory to explain the ethical assertions of journalists in various eras, focusing on the changing relationship between journalist and audience. He shows that the objectivity required in journalism is not a set of absolute standards but the same "fallible but reasonable" objectivity used for making decisions in professions and public institutions and must be understood as a long and complex interaction between many social, economic, and ideational factors. Ward also shows that the origin of journalism ethics is much earlier than previously recognized, going back to the partisan English newsbooks of the seventeenth centuries. Concern for objectivity gained momentum in journalism in the late 1800s and Ward discusses the many factors that prompted journalists to construct their own idea of objectivity. His proposed theory of pragmatic objectivity draws on studies in epistemology and philosophy of science to construct a richer, more adequate conception of objectivity to guide journalism practice today.

Talks about the ancient origins of ethics

I am a journalism prof (University of Alaska) and I used parts of this book for a class that dealt with the origins of objectivity. This is a well-researched work that begins with explaining why Plato and the cave parable have something to do with peoples' views of truth, absolute truth, the nature of reality and more. Don't think most journalism ethics books go back to the Greeks - but they should - and this one does. I got this from the UAF library; am ordering my own copy.

Not a sampler. Just extended book descriptions.

What a disappointment! From the book description, I thought CRAVE: THE 2015 ATRIA INDIE AUTHOR SAMPLER would be a collection of samples... a page or two (as it's only about 35 pages long) from each highlighted book. This does *not* contain samples, just slightly extended book descriptions, images of the book covers, and purchase links for each book and for the whole collective. Huge disappointment--I can't tell if I'll like a new (to me) author's writing just from the book description. I need to see an actual few paragraphs at least. This is a marketing ploy masquerading as a sampler.

I received this for a honest review from Netgalley and I was slightly disappointed. My disappointment was because I wanted MORE!!! I wish there was more to the teasers given. I understand it was a teaser but they were so short. Some drew me in and some were just lacking unfortunately due to the length. Wished the sampler was a bigger sample.

Just keeps getting better!!!!

Wow, Wow, WOW!!!! I'm not even sure where to begin. I loved this book so much!

The Dark King by C.J. Abedi is the highly anticipated (at least by me) sequel to Fae and picks up a few months after the events at the end of book one. Devilyn is now the dark king, having banished his father Alderon to a Yew tree and embracing the dark that runs in his blood. Caroline is back to being clueless about her heritage, thanks to Devilyn who erased her memories at the conclusion of Fae, and she's never been in more danger. Puck, Alderon's faithful minion, has served his thousand year sentence and is back on Earth ready to wreak havoc on the unsuspecting humans. Oh and he'd love nothing more than to kill Caroline.

I love these characters! Caroline is your typical beautiful, nerdy high school student, or at least she thinks she is thanks to Devilyn's sly trick. And unfortunately that belief lasts much longer in the book than I liked. I was ready for her to remember sooner rather than later. But she is still a strong-willed, stubborn character and surprisingly she accepts her fate in stride this time. In fact, she's very accepting with a "what next" attitude. I loved it!

Devilyn's character struggles this book. After centuries of fighting the darkness in him, he is now the dark king. Everything he hates, he has become, and a part of him likes this, so of course he loathes himself. He refuses to accept Odin's unfailing love, and he is suspicious of his half-sister who betrayed him in the last book. His character does a lot of growing in this book, and it's his struggles that make for an emotional ride this book.

Teddy and Tatiana are back in this installment. Teddy is his fun-loving, comic relief self. His easy banter with Caroline and his nonchalant way of acting about....well, everything lends a lighter tone to this otherwise dark book. Tatiana is much more reserved this book. She truly regrets what she did to Devilyn and Caroline and is trying to fight the darkness that resides in her blood. And I for one hope she wins. I disliked her in Fae but her demeanor and character are so drastically different from book one that I felt sorry for her and actually began liking her.

There is an addition to this cast of characters, Rowan. Rowan is a warrior and prince of the Light Fae. We actually meet Rowan in book one briefly, but in this book he has been sent by Dana to protect Caroline now that Devilyn has gone dark. I love Rowan, he is the exact opposite of Devilyn's character. Rowan is fun, lighthearted, and he brings the real Caroline out of her shell. In fact, Caroline relies on Rowan and she wishes she felt for him the way she does for Devilyn. Love triangle you ask? Sorta. Not quite though and that's what makes his character even more likable in my opinion.

This installment is so fast paced, much more than book one. I found I couldn't read fast enough to keep up with the suspense! Between Puck's antics and Katya's jealousy, Devilyn and Caroline couldn't get a break. The majority of the action takes place in the last half of the book, when the entire junior class is on a week long camping trip. Once I hit the main action, I couldn't set the book down and finished it in just over a day.

But this book isn't all suspense. The turmoiled romance between Devilyn and Caroline is featured throughout the book. This back and forth on Devilyn's part of saying he doesn't want her and hurting Caroline so she won't want him when in reality she is all he wants/needs. And Caroline so angry with him, yet so in love that she is willing to do whatever it may take to have that once in a lifetime love.

I have no complaints about this book, no dislikes. That's a first for me! Even the major (and I mean that!!!) cliffhanger ending, I didn't hate. In fact, it just makes me want book three even more. I guess I'll wait a year like everyone else. If you enjoyed book one or enjoy fairy mythology blended with real historical facts, a little romance, and a lot of suspense, I highly recommend this book/series. You won't be disappointed!!!

I love this series. The Fae Trilogy is magical, exciting, dangerous, romantic and a really fantastic read.

Caroline is such a smart, strong, feisty character and she loves with her whole heart. She is the type of person that you want to have an everlasting friendship with. She stands up for herself and she tries her best at everything she does. I am so pissed about this prophecy that I have know idea what to do or how they are going to resolve it, and they better resolve it.

I love Devilyn. He is handsome, funny, caring, dashing, witty, respectful, loving and he is courageous. However he is also frustrating as hell! He is so concerned with keeping Caroline safe that he doesn't realize how much harm he is doing to her as well as himself. He tries so hard to do the right thing, and do the right thing by Caroline. Then in this book he also finds out some devastating information and my heart just went out to him. In the end Devilyn is a great guy and a perfect addition to my book boyfriends.

Tatiana and Teddy are back, and I love them. Teddy is still the perfect best friend, he still supports Caroline, listens to her and isn't to nosy and isn't above making fun of her. He is smart and has a good heart and I love him for it. As for Tatiana, I am just going to say it, she has turned over a new leaf and I like her a lot better in this book than I did in the first. In this book you can really tell that she has been through something and has matured and changed for the better. You can see more that Odin raised her than that of the dark genes of Alderon.

There is a new character, his name is Rowan and he is amazing. Don't get me wrong I still love Devilyn but Rowan is a close second. He is of the light fae, and he is acting as a guardian to Caroline. He nice, playful, light hearted, caring and he takes his job of protecting Caroline very seriously. He falls for Caroline and if it wasn't for Devilyn I would love them together.

The Dark King was so amazing and I get drawn-in every time. I have all the feelings and I laugh, yell, and yes have a touch of sadness at times. Then there was the ending, which was a total shocker. Why in the hell did it have to be a cliffhanger. WHY!!!

I love Caroline and Devilyn together; think they make a perfect match and soul-mates should be able to be together, why are the Fates so cruel. I look forward to reading the final book in the Fae trilogy and if this series doesn't end well, I will burn all three of the books in a fit of uncontrollable rage.

Grammatical errors and authors using words that don't mean what they think they mean jar you out of the story. This book could have really benefited from a good editor. Also scenes are cut short or not fully explored as well as you as the reader would want them to be. Obviously, if you want to find out what happened next from Book 1, you'll buy this. I did too. Now we have to wait for the sisters to write Book 3. Hopefully, the next one will be better proofread.

A classic book...

This is a classic anthology of literature from writers throughout Latin America. I used this book several years back while studying at college and wanted to update my Spanish literature collection as I begin my studies at NYU's Graduate School, majoring in Spanish. Before I begin grad school, I am refreshing my Spanish and my study of literature.

This is the perfect self-study book and the price truly reflects the level of quality that you receive from the book. It is hard to find a great collection of classic and modern literature, complete with questions and reflection for the reader.

Please be aware that this book is ideal for those who have studied successfully Spanish and are at a near native to native level of understanding. There are no translations, all of the literature is in Spanish, along with the questions and reflections at the end of each literary piece.

One of the best aspects of this literary anthology is that it is complete with author introductions and photos of almost all of the authors whose works appear in the texts. Likewise, nearly all of the Latin American countries are represented, including my homeland, Puerto Rico. You will find literary pieces from Cuba, Dominican Republic, Chile, Uruguay, Mexico, Peru and nearly every other country- it is an excellent representation of work.

I highly recommend it if you are a serious learner. Thank you.

Good introduction to Hispanic American literature

This is not a "for fun" read. It is very much an educational text for studying the literature of Latin America from a historical perspective. From pre-colonial indigenous traditions through to fairly modern texts (early 2000s) this book covers excerpts from some of Latin America's most prominent and influential writers and gives historical context to their works.

Great textbook

I am currently using this book for my Spanish literature class. This book is well written and gives a great introduction to the different authors found within the textbook. The insight given for the different authors also allows you to get a feeling of the different events and feelings that surrounded the author when he wrote a certain piece. Overall great book.
