What is the difference between semi precious and Precious Gemstones?

Precious and semi-precious gemstones relies on the traditional classification in the West.

Precious stones are

Diamond,

Ruby,

Sapphire,

Emerald

All other gemstones being semi-precious.

This distinction also illustrates based on their rarity of the specific gemstones as well as, their prominence. Precious stones are translucent with fine color in their purest structures, except for the colorless diamond. Meanwhile, other stones are categorized by their color, translucency and solidity which make them to be classified as semi-precious stones .

This book is an excellent introduction to a fascinating subject. It is written in a way that is accessible to all.

Great read for the inquisitive
By Ken Mcwilliams
One does not need to be a scientist or student to understand this text. The author has a way of breaking down the complex vocabulary of an even more complex subject into language any layman can grasp. If you have an interest in geology in general or precious stones in particular you would do well to read this text.

This book does an excellent job introducing developers to the world of ABAP
By Amazon Customer
Learning how to develop applications using ABAP technology can be quite a challenge. Unlike other mainstream languages out there (e.g. Java, Python, etc.), learning ABAP is not as simple as downloading an SDK, pick up a book, and start coding through examples in a weekend. Indeed, before you ever start coding in ABAP, you must have at least a basic understanding of the AS ABAP platform, the proprietary development tools SAP uses, and so forth.

Though there are many books out there written about ABAP, I’ve yet to encounter a starting guide as cohesive as Getting Started with ABAP. This book does an excellent job introducing developers to the world of ABAP, blending basic ABAP language concepts with practical use cases, best practices, and perhaps most importantly, context. By context, I’m referring to those elements of ABAP which have changed over the years but still show up in legacy code (and sadly new code written using out-of-date practices). For new developers, it’s vital to have this background to be able to learn ABAP the right way and not pick up bad habits.

Like many consulting firms out there looking to grow their team, I’m always on the lookout for materials to help our developers quickly come up to speed in ABAP. This is especially true now as more and more developers flood into the SAP development landscape to support newer technologies such as SAPUI5/Fiori, HCP, and HANA. In our case, we’re usually dealing with seasoned developers who are just new to ABAP. For us, this guide is a perfect launching point for getting new developers plugged in. It’s concise, informative, accessible, and reads well (not like some of those regurgitated manuals you see out there). So, if you’re looking to get started in ABAP, I strongly recommend you give this book a try.

Best way to start with ABAP
By Alvaro Tejada Galindo
I started in the ABAP world around 16 years ago...and my first thought after seeing an R/3 screen was "I want to work for that company"...of course...my second thought was "This ABAP looks so weird"...anyway...after 11 years I managed to work for ABAP and funnily enough...for the almost 5 years that I have working with them...I have barely touched ABAP...

ABAP is a language that I truly love and admire...it's just awesome...

When I got my myself the chance of reading this book I was completely trilled...just an opportunity to go back to my roots and learn ABAP for the second time...

This book is just awesome...I wish it was available by the time I was learning ABAP...it explains everything in a very simple and concise way...focusing on the important stuff and as a bonus...you get to build a really nice project that involves most of the things that would use if working for a client...

Obviously...being an ABAP veteran myself...I knew most the stuff...but I gladly discovered some new features that are really cool...and now I'm glad that I know them and could use if I have the change to write new ABAP applications...

If you have never heard of ABAP but are curious...or if you're just starting on this fascinating book...you should really...and I mean really...read this book...

Disclaimer: I received this book free from SAP PRESS as part of their book review program. I was not required to write a positive review, and the opinions I’ve expressed are my own.

Pomegranates and Roses: My Persian Family Recipes, by Ariana Bundy

Ariana's family roots are firmly planted in Persian soil. She inherited her love of food and cooking from her grandparents - who grew fruit and grains and had vineyards producing prized grapes - and from her father, who owned and ran the first fine-dining French restaurant in Iran. With recipes such as Ice in Heavenand Pomegranate and Walnut Stew with Chicken, Ariana manages to capture the sensual, exotic pleasure of Persian cuisine as well as celebrating the values and traditions cherished by her forefathers. Their memories of when life was simpler, family mattered above all else and eating together was of paramount importance provide an evocative leitmotif.

In this beautiful book, she pays tribute to the rich heritage, cultural and culinary, that has shaped her approach to life, cooking and eating.

A Perfect Persian Rose
By Lynne
If memories can be captured in words, then this beautifully illustrated volume takes the reader on a journey back to pre-revolutionary Iran, where the author's family lived in a privileged world of vast land estates, high government positions, servants, European clothes, French restaurants, casinos, vacation homes on the Caspian Sea, hunting, riding, & family gatherings at holiday feasts. Not exactly just plain folk, her grandmother's aunt as a young girl lived with the Shah's sister, Ashraf & stayed with her as friend & confidante until Ashraf's death. One uncle became a Sufi and spent the rest of his life helping the sick & needy. Family photos confirm the fabled beauty of Iranian women - the author's mother looks like a young Claudia Cardinale. When the revolution came & the family had to flee, eventually coming to America, they took with them the gift they thought most practical -- caviar! The recipes reflect that lifestyle, with some being very simple, like chicken stew (Khorakeh Morgh), and others more elaborate like Quails stuffed with Rose Petals (Belderchineh Too Por). As with most Persian recipe books, the cook has to either have access to a Middle Eastern store where you can get some of the ingredients needed, like Omani limes, nigella seeds, Persian golden dried plums, barberries, beetroots, green unripe almonds, lavashak (Persian fruit roll), hogweed powder, or get them online. Saffron threads are used extensively in this cuisine, which must be inexpensive in Iran as opposed to the States, as is the use of Pomegranates, which are plentiful in Iran, while we can only get them here in the States in season. The family photos are evocative of the pre-revolutionary time among the wealthy and represent her family's memories of what Iran was once like for those lucky enough to have that lifestyle. But there's history too among the memories, of how things were done in the "old country", when cooking from scratch was the only way and the young women of the house learned by observing how things were done by watching the aunties & the family cook, such as boiling down pomegranate juice to make pomegranate molasses and sour cherry jam. Some family heirloom recipes are included, such as Baked Eggs with chicken, nutmeg & cloves (Kuku Ye Chekhertmeh). Most intriguing recipe is Wild Orchid Ice Cream (Bastaniyeh Akbar Mashti), which requires salep powder, the powdered root of the wild orchid, which is sold in packets in Middle Eastern shops. Because many of these dishes cannot be found in present day Persian restaurants which have become very Americanized & emphasize kabobs, it's worth the trouble to try and make some of these dishes at home. A lovely cookbook to add to your collection if you like Middle Eastern cuisine & enjoy reading about how different cultures add to the richness of a nation's cuisine.

Pomegranates and Roses
By Kate Runyan
Ariana Bundy has written a unique and very special Persian Cookbook, and Family Memoir. The book is filled with lovely and charming photographs, and family tales as well as wonderful recipes. Everything I've made from Pom and Roses has been excellent and the recipes are becoming are favorites, and in every case I've prefered Ariana's version to other similar Persian recipes. I have many other Persian cookbooks, but I would give this book top marks, it's an excellent cookbook and family memoir. It's a cookbook to savour , read, and treasure, Ariana's very special book will I think appeal to both Persians and non- Persians. Ariana should be very proud of this beautiful and very special book loaded with wonderful recipes. This is an absolutely wonderful Persian Cookbook.

THE gateway to Persian cuisine
By Amir Paivar
The diversity of content, the mix of modern-traditional design and its amazing photography has made it such a pleasant book to read, or shall I say, such a companion to have. Above all, personalising it by telling the tales of writer's family... It's a cocktail of a cookbook and one of stories.

I believe Roses and Poms is destined to make Persian cuisine international. Iranians will be proud of what they see and non-Iranians delighted of what they will discover! This is simply magnificent and a world-class work (no wonder Simon & Schuster went for it!)

Husbands who lost Depression jobs and hid in their houses for shame, the October morning energy of the postwar forties, the dusty heat of fifties television sets, the smell of Vitalis on men's hair, women in gloves that felt sexy touching your skin, men who whistled (with trills) and wore hats tipped to one side, the barefoot LSD weddings when the universe seemed a conspiracy in everyone's favor. . . . "

Each of these ten chapters is a virtual time capsule written with keen intelligence, feeling, and an uncanny sense of the essential experiences of the era: the unexpected, idiosyncratic sights, sounds, occasions, and events that defined not just the time but the way we remember it.  This is a book of myriad pleasures--a reminder, as we plunge headlong into the future, of the richness and importance of our past.

Amazon.com Review
The 19th-century French poet Charles Baudelaire once said that each age has "a deportment, a glance, a smile of its own." In What it Felt Like, Pulitzer Prize-winning author Henry Allen captures the spirit of the 20th century decade by decade in a sparkling little book that reads like a Lily Tomlin-meets-Gallagher monologue (minus the watermelon). Ten brief chapters describe the sights, sounds, and smells of the decade, from the "good years" of 1900-1910 to the "whatever" decade of the 1990s. Allen also manages to convey the "feel" of the times, dispelling some myths along the way. For example, he points out that for most people, the Depression of the 1930s was not so much about what one saw (breadlines, Hoovervilles), but what wasn't there: cars on the street, new babies, factory whistles, construction sites. And in the pièce de résistance, Allen describes the 1980s as the "Air Guitar Decade"--in which symbol became substance: "I'm not a doctor, but I play one on T.V...." Though the focus is primarily on the urban northeast, these witty little time capsules, sure to inspire nostalgia, are an excellent guide to America's past. --M. Stein

From Booklist
Allen, a longtime feature writer and editor for the Washington Post , examines the last century, decade by decade. To capture a particular decade's "feeling," Allen incorporates small mountains of details--food and clothes, slang and posture, issues and idols--in each essay, often including fictional conversations between individuals who are somehow representative. These essays are sometimes contrarian, reminding readers, for example, that most 60s young people neither fought in Vietnamese jungles nor marched for civil rights and against the war. Still, the dominant news stories of that (or any) decade are inevitably part of what defines the experience of the era. Not a replacement for a solid history of twentieth-century America, but a useful supplement to such a history. Mary Carroll

"Henry Allen, one of the best deadline essayists in the business, has done something very delicious here. At a time when books get bigger and bigger, he has managed to compress ten decades of the American century into 159 pages, surely as impressive a feat as decoding the human genome. Bravo, hip hip, and huzzah."
--Christopher Buckley, author of
Thank You for Smoking

"Congratulations on a work of reporting, writing, and thinking that is truly exceptional."
--Jim Lehrer

"Some authors write at you. Allen writes with you. You will hear better, see clearer, touch more feelingly. . . after reading along with him. This is a book to savor."
--Roger Kennedy, author of
Burr, Hamilton, and Jefferson: A Study in Character

"A zinger of a read. . . . I'll read this brilliant book till the pages wear out to remind myself of the way it was during my century."

ALLEN KNOW WHAT IT FEELS LIKE
By Xavier Onnasis
In this book, Henry Allen, one of the Washington POST's big dogs, has written beautifully of our past century. He celebrates America from the start of "Modern Times" to the edgy reality of Today.
His unerring hand captures the essence of each decade with the keen eyes and ears of a participant. Remarkably, his skill reveals even the rich patois of early dialogues; capturing the meter and parlance of the day-to-day conversations of the early 1900's and beyond.
As he takes us on this compelling jaunt through the decades, a marvelous story of The People of the past unfolds. Allen treats the reader's senses to vivid visual history, too, seasoning our "conventional wisdom" with a masterful dash of his always believable characteriztions.
Originally published in The POST, the series was immediately snagged by the publisher for this release.
Allen, a Pulitzer Prize winner, has captured my imagination with "What It Felt Like." In this highly readable, enjoyable book, he moves easily from scenes of the chattering bustle of the Industrial Revolution to the brilliant sunshine of the acid-drenched, screwy Sixties. From the agonies of the Thirties to the boomtime of the Fifties.
I urge you to pick up a copy, curl up on a lazy day and enjoy one of my new favorite books. A thoroughly enjoyable "read."
PS to GRAND PARENTS: Why not give copies to the kids and the family this Christmas? "What It Felt Like" is a great conversation starter.

Henry Allen Really Knows What It Felt Like!
By JA Thiele
What It Felt Like is the perfect description of this little jewel of a book. I read it, I looked at the illlustrations, and I could smell the leaves burning on the road outside our house at dusk; I could hear the sound of my jump rope swishing across the pavement of our small town street. I could smell the bacon and eggs my mother cooked for us on school mornings (and then I could remember the smell of the grits which I hated!). I know, I finally know, why the sixties seemed so dizzying to me, not because Allen lectures me on them, but because he wakens my senses of them -- the sights, the sounds, and the sweetness of them.
How lovely to be reminded and not "talked to." This book is not a "tome." What It Felt Like is an invitation to recall, to reflect, to rejoice. How delightful to read a book where the mere phrase, often followed by an electrifyingly exciting tour de force of word combinations, does all the work, and I have all the fun. How extraordinary to find a writer who so clearly treasures the true glory of words, and not just the abundance of them.
What a wonderful Christmas gift Mr. Allen has given us. I'm going to give it to my children and my friends, and my neighbors and ....

What It Felt Like
By A Customer
It is a daunting task to capture the essence of the 20th Century in one book, but Henry Allen has done it to a faretheewell. The format is one that holds one's attention with wonderful language and imagery. It is humorous and enchanting at the same time. Obviously, Mr. Allen did not live through the entire century, but he writes about each decade so believably that he takes you on a journey with him that places you in the middle of daily life in each of the decades. The technique is wonderful, and the book is a joy.

Review
"At last -- Catholic manga that's as good as the popular stuff. It even reads right to left! I overheard my daughter's friend say, 'I always think of popes as always being popes. I never think of them growing up.' This manga will give kids such good thoughts." -- Mike Aquilina Executive Vice-President, St. Paul Center for Biblical Theology, author of many books, "Endorsement"

"There are many books on Pope Benedict XVI, most of which are academic in nature. Precious few of them are intended for younger readers. Habemus Papam is a wonderful contribution to biographical literature on Pope Benedict XVI, and especially helpful in conveying a positive introduction to the Holy Father to a new generation of Catholic youth." -- Christopher Blosser, founder, The Ratzinger Fan Club "Endorsement"

..".captures Pope Benedict's life magnificently...The books are excellent for tweens and teens (and adults, too) and should be spread around. Evangelization comes in many forms and this manga format may just be the answer to those who need to hear the Gospel message." -- Mater et Magistra Magazine "Endorsement"

A personal portrait of a private, but great man
By Henry
The author and artist did a fantastic job on painting such a wonderful portrait of the personal side of such a public man. It's even more amazing that the majority of the storyline is based on true events! I think this readable form will definitely make the pope much more relate-able and clears up many common misconceptions about the man, his role, and his reputation. Of the many religious, theological and philosophical books that I've encountered, this one is definitely a truly thought-provoking and deeply touching at the same time. Some of the flashbacks weren't easy to follow, but they made sense in the course of the storyline. I thoroughly enjoyed the biographical, educational, and especially the personal aspects of this novel. I would highly recommend anyone who already has an opinion or wants to have an opinion about the pope to read this and get to know him.

Great gift for all tweens and teens who want to know about a great leader
By Mary G
Habemus Papam: Pope Benedict XVI is a fabulous resource for learning about Pope Benedict ... the man of faith and love who has often been misrepresented, misinterpreted in our secular world. The story, written by renowned Catholic author, Regina Doman, captures Pope Benedict's life magnificently. Within the manga-story telling genre, Doman has captured his fears, his sacrifices, his love of family. But, most importantly, Doman has captured the Holy Father's life-long faith and trust in God's providence, in Divine wisdom.

The book opens with then-Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger at the Papal Conclave. He cannot believe anyone would want him to be Pope. He is scared of the responsibilities and his lack of skills to guide the Church during the turbulent 21st century. But his prayer, his answer to God's call is not "no" but rather a reiteration of the Blessed Mother's: "Thy will be done".

The story then shifts to flashback: to young Joseph's life in pre-Hitler Bavaria; his father's work against the rising Nazi menace; the move from their home-town to get away from possible retributions as Hitler rises to power. As Joseph becomes a teen-ager, pressured to join the Hitler Youth Movement, to join-up and fight for the "Fatherland", Joseph is again filled with fear and uncertainty. But rather than giving up or giving in, he again prays for wisdom and again accepts God's providence and protection: "Thy will be done."

The book continues, describing specific events that defined Benedict's pastoral and academic life and his constant "yes"; bringing the story back to the present and World Youth days and papal activities.

But Habemus Papam is not an in-depth analysis of Pope Benedict's life. Doman avoided the deep theology and Catholic teachings prevalent in so much of Pope Benedict's work in order to make the book attractive to the primary audience: tweens and teens. Instead, she focused on those parts of his life that suit the manga-style: the majestic mountains of Bavaria, the conflicts with the Nazis, the heroism of Pope Benedict's predecessor, Blessed John Paul II. And the story she weaves is entertaining ... while evangelizing.

I highly recommend this book for all tweens and teens who want to know about the man behind the myths, the man who loves God above all else and puts his faith in Him. Excellent!

A ray of truth amid all the nasty gossip
By Mrs Cookie Baker
I loved this manga story. It is based on very reliable sources and depicts the life of Pope Benedict the Great. The author is very careful to note in back which bits are fictitious, and there are only a couple of parts that just add characterisation.
Very informative about the life of the Vatican too and the changes and challenges that have befallen it. Although in manga form it is very moving in parts, such as where the Holy Father takes the rap for all the evil-doers who have infiltrated the Church, as only Christ would have done, and he even met with victims of abuse and comforted them personally.
I came away with a renewed respect and affection for this holy, humble, erudite yet loving Bible scholar whom we are greatly gifted to have as the leader of the Christian world. Whether folk follow his wise guidance is another matter; there are many rebellious spirits.
This Holy Father is a model of courage and virtue and this book and the illustrations, captures this very well.
I warmly recommend this book for Catholics and anyone who would like to learn a little something about what the much derided Papacy really is.
