The Preface Does Not Lie

The second paragraph of the preface of this text says "This book is aimed at advanced students in molecular genetics and molecular biology." They are not lying. I am sure that this is a great reference if you are doing master's or Ph.D. level work, but if this is the text that is assigned for an undergraduate course, as it was for me, then go to your department chair and protest. You will spend $200 plus dollars and unless you are a very sophisticated student, you are going to have a hard time getting anything from this text.

I am a returning student who has a degree in a different field, so I was able to navigate my way through this text, with lots of time spent on Google, or Wikipedia, or just the dictionary deciphering what I was reading. Most of my classmates however were using this as a paperweight after the first few weeks, and that is a generous estimate of the amount of time that they were able to use this book. It is too advanced for an introductory level molecular genetics course. The authors assume a knowledge of the terminology used, so there is very little explanation of terms that they deem to be foundational.

If you are an undergraduate instructor reading my review and contemplating assigning this as the primary text for your course, please, please, for the sake of you students don't. Put it on library reserve as a secondary source and assign a text that is more approachable, or contact your representative at the publisher and see if they are able to do a custom print for you of just the most important chapters that you want covered, though this will be difficult as the text also make reference to topics covered in other parts of the book frequently.

This reminded me of another thing I really, really disliked about this book. When the authors referred to other sections of the book, they did it based on the title of the section instead of using Chapter/Section numbering (i.e 6.9, 8.6, 13.13, etc). This meant that unless you memorized the table of contents, you basically needed to read the entire table of contents to find where in the text the reference was. Then when you finally found the reference, it usually provided no more clarity than what you were reading in the first place.

One thing that I do like is that at the end of most chapters, there is a reference to primary research papers used to construct the chapter. This is very helpful if you want to go more in depth into a specific topic, but that only highlights further that this is not really a text geared towards undergraduates.

Great book but terrible textbook

I am currently teaching an undergraduate molecular biology class using this book (the book was already chosen). My Ph.D. is in cell biology, but I do have a general knowledge of molecular biology (some aspects more than others), however, I find certain chapters of the book extremely hard to read. It is more an encyclopedia than a textbook. This is absolutely a book for advanced courses and readers. As such, the level of details is staggering and impressive. As a textbook, it is not user-friendly, as it weaves story after story, often repeated from one chapter to the other, without highlighting the really important material from the details. I wish the authors had the main story separated from the experimental details, which may be interesting for the experts but overwhelming for students. All in all, it is a great molecular biology reference book to have; maybe a good book for a graduate level class, but absolutely not for undergraduate courses.

Organizational design made feasible

Competing by design is a great source for for anybody who thinks about organizational design. After having read it, you will never consider "cocktail-napkin" designs again, and you will recognize when you see a design created that way. The book doesn't only explain the basic elements of design, but also the do's and dont's of a design project. The structure of the book is very well-conceived, and the level of detail is just right: Focus on the important steps, best practices and lessons, with enough backup examples, and without boring repetitions or lenghthy explanations. I'm not sure you will sleep better after having read the book, as the size of the design project becomes clear, but you will certainly have the tools to make the process a successful one.

A great book on the hard and soft factors of organizational design

A great book providing a broad overview of the various organization design factors and techniques. These techniques are also embellished with good examples; in fact each chapter begins with an example. Many ideas and theories in org design (such as HPWS, Jay Galbraith's theories, BPR etc) are covered. The authors also give equal if not higher credence to the organization culture, the soft underbelly of organizational design. Several examples of theirs illustrate how even the most well planned designs go completely awry when cultural fit is not taken into consideration in the redesign.
The authors have put their heart and soul into this book and it shows. I own this book and keep referring to it once in a while. The only reason to drop one star is because I would have wished for a little more visuals. It gets pretty dry, especially towards the end.

Excellent for Children!

I grew up listening to this story on audio tapes (not that I'm THAT old...), and I must say, not only is it a captivating story that makes a good chapter bedtime story book, but it really does help children grasp the concept that sometimes a loving God has to allow bad things to happen. When I became an adult, I realized that some people question whether God is really a God of love because of what He allows to happen. It had never occurred to me to ask such questions, and I believe this book was a strong factor in that. I just got a copy for my children and plan on reading it for bedtime stories. Now if I could just find the audiobook....

Best written explanation for children about why bad things happen and people do bad things

I also grew up reading this book. I loved to read and I would check it out of our church library over and over again. It has stayed with me and helps me to explain to others why God allows bad things to happen and why he has to allow sin to run its course. It is Biblically based and helps to understand the war between God and Satan. I am starting to read it to my 5 year old now that she is asking what sin is and why did bad people kill Jesus. It is a wonderful story about God's love for us and his overwhelming desire that all should come to know him and be with him. Although it is a children's book, it is a great read for adults who are new to faith or learning about Christianity.

Every Child should read it

I think this is a must read for every child, and adult too, for that matter. It answers so many questions about life, death, sin and the great conflict between good and evil in our world. I am reading it to my grand kids when they visit and we are all enjoying the thoughts put forth in behalf of Biblical information.

Her gift to me.

I found Dr. Clark's work hoping to more intelligently support a relative with cancer. Isn't it a hoot that often we think we are giving just a little kindness out, but the universe pays us back in floods of love, joy, and peace? That was my case. Just knowing her and the people who worked with her made my world make sense. Do you know what I mean that a world of suffering, of disease, of loss and pain does not make sense? Fundamentally, in a universe of precision, and beauty and development over long periods of time, what goes on in this planet seems insane and shocking. In the middle of this mud puddle I came to love a woman who would wake at 4:00 to do hours of tedious detailed research then work for hours in a tiny little pink house in a dingy border town in Mexico with people who others had cast out to die because they were not repairable on ordinary terms, at least not cost effective. After that she would write for hours to document her findings and research new information. She had a few supporters so she could be an independent researcher. When she came under the wrath of the cancer industry she suffered but she was able to secure still a few more years of research to uncover the root mechanisms of disease. She could only have persisted in her efforts if she really believed beyond a shadow of doubt that disease was a mistake that could be corrected...that this was fundamentally wrong...that we were doing this to ourselves because of ignorance...that we could change our minds and decide against all of this suffering and insanity. That was the gift she gave to me, it was the transmission of a new seed of trust in life, of trust in the laws of life, and trust in my own abilities to learn to live in compliance with reality and to reject the mud and choose a cleaner pathway. She restored my hope that the universe is nurturing of its children and has heard the sorry cries of suffering and has acted and will act to help us move on to more rational futures and more intelligent ways of living.

Why is it only now that I found out about this book? Hmmm.
This book is excellent!!!. I wish that I found it sooner. Too many of my friends are passing away from this devastating disease. I can now tell them to get this book and read it and follow all instructions. Thanks Dr. Clark.

Very good tips on just living in general, any ache's and pains, illnesses, flu, etc. I don't have cancer but this book was extremely enlighteneing and I tell anyone I know that does have it about this book.
